Overnight at Keshi Mountain*
by Yu Yan
Crickets are local anchorites,
shushing upon hearing my footsteps, chirping again once I leave.
A night like this, the misty universe
is completely mine.
During the day, I go out to see the lay of the land
like a minister touring Kuiji, viewing life's works.
Ruoye Creek flows day and night, Cloud Gate Temple
has bells not heard outside the high mountains.
Nature spares nothing here,
giving splendor and luxuriance with a simple nod.
Thinking about life on earth,
perhaps an imprint that takes a century to unveil is nothing to disrelish.
Translator’s note:
Keshi Mountain (Lit. Monolith Mountain) is in Meishan Village near Shaoxing, a city in eastern China's Zhejiang Province.
