Terry Hsiao

Chief Executive Officer | Hooks Mobile

Mr. Hsiao is a well-recognized entrepreneur in the mobile telecommunications industry. Since 2000, he has founded three start-ups including InphoMatch, which was acquired by Sybase (Now SAP) for $425M in 2006. Currently, he serves as CEO of Hooks Mobile, bringing his extensive expertise in the wireless industry to the company. Mr. Hsiao has been appointed by the Governor in Virginia, Bob McDonnell, to serve on the Board of Innovation and Entrepreneurship Investment Authority in Virginia. Hsiao also serves on the Board of Governors at MIT Sloan School of Management, Monte Jade DC Chapter, Confucius Institute at George Mason University (GMU), and Advisory Board at Rutgers University College of Engineering. Hsiao has an Honors BSEE from Rutgers University and SM (MBA) from MIT Sloan School of Management.

Shelton Mercer

Chief Innovation Officer | 1776

Shelton’s innovative spirit is an integral part of his work at 1776, where he focuses on strategic partnerships, public, and media relations, and thought leadership. He’s got a rich career history, having consulted for companies like Disney, GE, NBCUniversal, and KPMG. Shelton is also a seasoned entrepreneur; he currently serves as President and co-founder of AuDigent, and he co-founded the award-winning TwitCHANGE. A certified leadership and life coach, Shelton follows his “Live on Purpose” mantra through his work as a global impact investor and philanthropist.

Nina Wang, Esq.

Vice President/General Counsel, | Greencourt Capital Inc.

Ms. Wang joined Greencourt Capital Inc. (“Greencourt”) as Vice President and General Counsel in 2015.  As one of the five executive board managers, Ms. Wang helped with the formation of W-G Capital, which is a venture of West Group and Greencourt.  Ms. Wang is in charge of the structure design of international transactions, tax planning, investment decisions, and post-investment management.  In addition, Ms. Wang maintains relationship with investors and provides overseas real estate investment strategies and tax counseling services for Chinese investors. Ms. Wang has approximately 20 years of tax/finance experiences as a tax attorney.  She worked in the finance and tax planning area for Deloitte & Touche, Thelen Reid & Priest LLP, IBM, Lockheed Martin Corporation and Computer Sciences Corporation. Ms. Wang has an Honors Bachelor’s degree from Nanjing University and earned her LL. M. in Taxation from New York University School of Law.  She is a member of the New York State Bar and a CPA licensed in New York State.

Tony Lau

Chief Strategy Officer | AP Group 

Tony Lau is the Chief Strategy Officer of AP Group which owns a portfolio of technology, consumer electronics, and equipment manufacturing companies. Mr. Lau is also the Managing Director of Détente Group which provides financing and management services for satellite, renewable energy, and other infrastructure projects. Mr. Lau has extensive credentials as a senior financial executive, investment banker and consultant across a wide range of industries including telecommunications, Internet services, computer hardware, application software, pharmaceuticals, and clean technology. Mr. Lau holds a BS degree in Biochemistry from the University of Waterloo, BS degree in Pharmacy and an MBA degree from Northeastern University. He is fluent in English and Chinese.

Danai Brooks

Managing Partner | Glen Echo Capital

Mr. Brooks is the Managing Partner of Glen Echo Capital, a private equity firm that invests in middle-market industrial companies.  Mr. Brooks also serves as President of Komline-Sanderson Corporation, a Glen Echo Capital portfolio company that manufactures wastewater, waste-to-energy and chemical processing equipment. Prior to founding Glen Echo Capital, Mr. Brooks led the turnaround and sale of Dyadic, a public industrial biotechnology company, to DuPont. While at Dyadic, Mr. Brooks furthered the development of a C1-based vaccine program with Sanofi Pasteur and other partners. Earlier in his career, Mr. Brooks advised industrial, technology and healthcare clients as an investment banker in J.P. Morgan’s M&A Group, where he led mergers and acquisitions in excess of $40 billion.  He began his career working as an engineer on the manufacturing floor of Dell, Mars, and Ford. Mr. Brooks holds a B.S. in Industrial Engineering and Master of Engineering from Cornell University, a Master of Engineering Management from Northwestern University and an MBA from Northwestern’s Kellogg School of Management. He lives in McLean, Virginia with his wife and twin boys.

Grace Y. Toh

Chief Executive Officer | Abbington Investment Group, LLC

Grace Y. Toh is the CEO of Abbington Investment Group, a boutique independent investment management firm.  She has over 30 years of experience in private banking and wealth management, concentrating on building and managing long-term relationships with high net worth and institutional clients. Previously, she was a Senior Vice President at HSBC Private Bank and The Private Bank at Bank of America. She is a graduate of Wellesley College with a B.A. in Economics and Chinese Studies. She studied Management Information Systems and Accounting at MIT’s Sloan School of Management and earned her MBA in Finance from the Jones School of Management at Rice University. She has served on a number of not-for-profit boards and is a member of Wellesley College’s Board of Trustees.

Mark has a demonstrated track record performing in various roles providing technical assistance and consulting services to increase the economic development impact of clients. Over eighteen years of consulting experience supporting both the public and private sector and four years’ experience with major telecommunications service providers. “Big 4” firm and government consulting experiences include capturing and leading large technology projects across numerous federal defense, civilian and health agencies. Served as the trusted advisor to the C-Suite of small businesses and government agencies.

Carter McClure

He oversees the management, membership, and strategic partnerships at our Pennovation campus while encouraging cluster-driven collaboration and creating an atmosphere of inclusion. He’s passionate about finding solutions to economic inequality and understanding the choices people make with limited resources.

Dr. Elizabeth Cho-Fertikh, PhD

Co-Founder & Managing Director | Media Angels

Elizabeth Cho-Fertikh, Ph.D. is a Co-Founder & Managing Director of MEDA Angels, a healthcare-focused angel investor group, based in WSH, DC, Philadelphia, PA and San Francisco, CA.  Her 25+ year multidisciplinary career in life sciences has spanned across academia, industry, startup & angel investing sectors.  She is a trained cancer biologist with dozens of research manuscripts published in the highest impact journals, including Nature, Nature Cell Biology  & PNAS.  She served as a Scientific Review Officer administering multi-million dollar oncology and neurotrauma grant portfolios for the Dept of Defense, the Cancer Prevention Institute of TX and switched to the ‘other side’ by developing Request for Proposal grants at the NIH focused on genomics and other high throughput technologies to better understand childhood diseases. In industry, she worked in Regulatory Affairs at Macrogenics and RegenXbio supporting therapeutic FDA IND, Fast Track and related preclinical and clinical phase submissions for cancer immunotherapeutics and gene therapies.  Elizabeth established ECF Biosolutions, an advisory practice, based on her prior collective experiences, supporting early-stage ventures thru pharmaceutical companies, focusing on scientific & regulatory affairs, funding, and investment due diligence.  Clients have included Amgen, Boehringer Ingelheim, Gore Medical, Becton Dickinson, Macrogenics, dozens of start-ups and angel investors. Dr. Cho-Fertikh enjoys mentoring start-up entrepreneurs and can be seen around town at incubators including Halcyon House, Johns Hopkins FastForward, and the Korea Innovation Center.  She received her BA from Johns Hopkins, MS from Georgetown, Ph.D. from Thomas Jefferson Medical School, and completed her postdoctoral fellowships at the NIH and Harvard Medical School.

Sarah Xu

Sarah has 17 years’ experience in international trading, merchandise license, manufacturing, whole sale, retail, and e-commerce. She is co-founder and CEO of AY Entertainment Group Inc., co-founder of FMX new media Inc., co-founder of the future VR/AR laboratory, first CEO and co-founder of global 3d media co. She is also a winner of the “new product award” granted by the international advanced imaging society. Sarah served as a board member of several international groups and she is a long-term member of EO, Entrepreneur Organization.

Brain Park

Director | Startup Grind DC

Brian is a startup evangelist, advisor, and angel investor. He is the director for Startup Grind DC and Managing Partner at the SparkLabs Cyber+Blockchain (formerly Fishbowl Labs), which is the premier startup accelerator in the Washington DC area. He is also the Director of Technology for Curator Solutions, which is an ed-tech startup that creates video business cases for the classroom. He was also formerly the global COO of Startup Grind, which is one of the largest hi-tech startup communities in the world with over 2,000,000 startup entrepreneurs in 600 cities. Prior to Startup Grind, he has over 18 years of professional experience in web/online/mobile product development. He has experience in developing innovative consumer and enterprise products and services. Brian has started three previous startups – Logistics Information Technology, VA Care ($20M in Revenues), and Securva. He has previously worked at AOL as a senior software developer and Merrill Lynch as a software developer for hi-speed trading platforms. He has been featured in Forbes as “17 Top Business Gurus to Follow”, DCInno 50 on Fire for 2017 and 2018 and other publications such as TechCrunch, VentureBeat, Washington Post, Huffington Post, Politico, and Washington Business Journal. He has a BS in Information Systems/Policy & Management from Carnegie Mellon University.
