Today I wanna talk about something that’s all over the news these days. You guessed it, it’s about the movie version of Warcraft hitting the theater.
As many of you know, Warcraft is a movie adapted from the eponymous game series, which I don’t even have to describe how popular it is here in China because I’ve been hearing great things about it since a decade ago when I was in grade 9.
But, to be completely honest with you guys, even as a gamer myself, I have never, like literally never, played the game. Not even for a single second. I think after I missed the window when I was in grade 9 because I had to study for the High School Entrance Exam, I just kinda accepted the fact that I wasn’t going to play this game. Even to this day I still feel kinda indifferent to whatever is related to the game.
So I’m sure there are people like me that are completely ignorant about what’s going on with Warcraft and I’m sure you guys are gonna check out the movie sooner or later. So what I’m gonna do here at Test Daily is fill you in on some basic info about this game that you need to know about before you go into the cinema.
So, Warcraft is not a single game, it’s actually a franchise of five core games including Warcraft one, two and three, as well as World of Warcraft and Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft. The first three of these core games are in the real-time strategy genre, where opposing players command virtual armies in battle against each other or a computer-controlled enemy. The fourth and best-selling title of the franchise is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game, where players control their character and interact with each other in a virtual world. The most recent title is Hearthstone, a digital collectible card game.
Since the creator of the film specifically wanted people who have never played the game to also enjoy watching it, I’m not gonna go into the details to spoil it for you. The movie so far has grossed over $121 million, which includes $2 million worth of pre-sold tickets twelve days before its premiere on June 8, which rose to a staggering $20.7 million by June 6 in China only. So Warcraft is doing pretty well, at least in China, although it got some pretty negative rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
