Infamous commandant of the Prisoner of War camp Andersonville, Wirz is only one of two former Confederates executed for war crimes committed during the Civil War, specifically for overseeing the harsh conditions of the Andersonville camp where thousands of prisoners died from exposure, disease and starvation.

Why

significant

The conditions at Andersonville were not entirely of his making given that the citizens of the town were also experiencing deprivations due to the war.  However, the conditions that were allowed to persist in camp, including the lack of basic sanitation were considered needlessly barbaric. Wirz’s execution still remains somewhat controversial given that perjury was committed by at least one witness against him at trial. His execution was also botched in that his neck did not snap when he was hanged and he was forced to slowly strangle.
