Andre’s capture a few days before led to the discovery of Benedict Arnold’s attempt to betray the American cause by helping the British capture both the fortification at West Point and even General George Washington.  Andre was prosecuted by a military court and sentenced to death.

Why

significant

Andre’s execution and Arnold’s total failure to deliver led to his being vilified by both armies.  Andre’s composure during his execution, and request to be executed by firing squad as befitting an officer (the request was denied, he was hanged as a spy) impressed his American captors for his bravery: he is remembered more fondly than the traitor Benedict Arnold to many.
