As sporadic cases emerged in China's Liaoning and Anhui provinces over the past week, people are alert to COVID prevention and control again.
On May 16, an epidemiological report on a COVID-positive 61-year-old retiree in Shenyang, Northeast China's Liaoning province, captured netizens' attention on Weibo. Discussions surrounded the man's gourmet choices and the food map that he created detailing the local restaurants he visited prior to being quarantined.
Netizens were surprised at the man's active retirement lifestyle. Apart from road trips and karaoke, the 61-year-old treats himself to restaurant meals an average of twice a day, delighting in a variety of foods including:

May 6th – Shopping. Smoked chicken racks on Sanhao Street.

May 7th – Dining at Zhenxing Street Sheep's Haslet.

May 8th – Lunch at Old Seasons at noon; Dinner at Original Tastes; Meal at a sheep's haslet restaurant near his neighborhood.

May 9th – Lunch at Lanzhou Hand-Pulled Noodles; Dinner at a seafood restaurant.

May 10th – Lunch Chaoji Stewed Meat.

May 11th – Lunch at Dongtang Noodles.

Nearly all the restaurants he frequented were well-known.
'Why does every COVID patient in Shenyang incorporate chicken racks in their diet? How good does chicken rack taste? ' asked one Weibo user. The question went viral and received over 620,000 likes and 30,000 replies as of noon on Tuesday.
Suddenly, the discussion of Shenyang's recent outbreak has turned into that of the city's delicacies — especially chicken racks. 'It was supposed to be a serious issue, but now it has turned into A Bite of Shenyang,' said one netizen. 'Some of the restaurants that don't sound related to chicken racks are actually famous for their chicken racks,' commented another.
Whether grilled, fried or smoked, the chicken skeleton is a favorite with the locals. With less meat, more oil, tasty and affordable price, it has won the hearts of many Shenyang people. Don't forget the standard sides for chicken racks: stretched noodles and beer.

'Decades ago, when food was in short supply, people in Shenyang didn't want to throw the chicken skeleton away, so they created different ways to cook it, and now it has become a delicacy in the city,' explained an interviewee in the food documentary Taste Humanity at Night.
The shift from disease to dishes is a reflection of the Chinese peoples' confidence in fighting against the pandemic. Oriental Outlook Magazine commented: The 'off topic' discussion about food is based on the public's trust and determination in the Chinese government. Due to the swift action of the government, peace and normality can be maintained in China, and the public has the leisure to joke about chicken racks.
