Please outline, in no more than 600 words, why you think you would make a good Student Quality Reviewer, and why you are interested in the role. *

Because I am now kind of geek who get so much fun from observing classes and giving constructive comments. Almost every time I attend a class/lecture/workshop, I have a secret habit of spending a few minutes to map out who is asking the questions and how the teachers react to it. This is due to my past research and teaching experiences both here in London and back in Shanghai. All my professional knowledge and skills can contribute to a dynamic and supportive framework if I get the opportunity to work as a student quality reviewer with you in UCL.

Beyond my profession in teaching and pedagogy, I am also a PhD student from IOE who keep reflecting on the impact of my past university experiences. I do not want to keep silent and stay behind. Being treated as an adult with sharp eyes, rather than an inexperienced naïve student, I would like to fight for the position to speak for shy persons like younger me. For that reason, I need to be the change I want to see, to step forward.

This application is not just a gesture to get myself out the comfort zone, nor to show my passion, what I hope to learn from this possible reviewing experiences is more to help Asian students feel deeper connected with UCL, for example, the IOE master students. In that case, the university’s role is more completed. The students’ engagement can be fuller developed and explored. Furthermore, I would like to tweak this model into my future career as a teaching fellow in some university. I can imagine my future students at ease to point out what I do is wrong as long as they can give reasons rather than just emotions. This dream of equal dialogue is now a reality here in UCL.

What UCL has done, based on what I know from UCL Education conference and websites, along with the published books and your emails, I have to confess that is something I never see from other universities. I always know that I want to be part of this sooner or later, but I hesitated for long. I was afraid of my backgrounds, age, English skills may get me declined or discriminated. However, I think if I never try, I would not know which part needs an improvement. Probably I just need to unfriend my self-doubt.

That is why I am intrigued by your email and trying my best to convince you that I am qualified and ready for taking up the role. What’s more, I also appreciate what UCL is trying to make. From the student quality reviewer, I understand how significant it is. Definitely UCL is leading the global HEI in student-staff relationship. I cannot think of a reason to refuse joining this grand journey.

We are what we choose to be. I have made up my mind to be a student quality reviewer. Empowered by my profession, passion, empathy, experiences, bilingual skills, I am also confident that my participation will make it a more inclusive future.
