书籍具有不朽的精神,它们是迄今为止人类所创造持续最久的产品。庙宇会损坏,塑像会颓废,但是书籍却能长存人间。对于思想而言,时间并不重要。它们今天仍然能同多年前第一次在作者的头脑刚刚产生时那样鲜活。当年的话语和思想如今依然通过书本在向我们生动地述说。时光的唯一作用就在于它筛出了糟粕,因为只有真正优秀的文学作品才能存留下来。那些杰出的伟人不会从这个世界消失,他们的灵魂保存在书本里,云游四方。
译文 Books possess the essence of immortality.They are by far the most lasting products of human effort.The universe can be damaged,temples and statues decay,but books survive.Time is of no account with great thoughts,which are as fresh today as when they first passed through their author.s minds ages ago.What was then said and thought still speaks to us as vividly as ever from the printed page.The only effect of time has been to sift out the bad products;for nothing in literature can long survive but what is really good.The great and good people do not die from this world.Embalmed in books,their spirits walk abroad.
