She refused to obey the bus driver’s order to give up her seat in the “colored section” to a white passenger, after the whites-only section was filled. She was arrested, which led to the Montgomery Bus Boycott. On November 13, 1956, the Supreme Court ruled that bus segregation was unconstitutional.

The Montgomery Bus Boycott set off the civil rights movement. Her act of defiance made her an icon of resistance to racial segregation.
