The first medical university for female students opened, offering the opportunity for female doctors to become licensed as well as offering female patients doctors who were familiar with their conditions and predicaments.  While many women were recognized in their communities as healers for generations, they were never recognized with the formal title of doctors.

Why

significant

Women’s equal rights were a long time in coming, but the establishment of an institution of higher learning for medicine was a major step in that direction.  Nevertheless, the school did suffer from an assumed reputation of being inferior, simply because the students were female.
