1.1
满;然后他被hart与heart的双关感动的不行,很妙的又说是自己会变成stag很有sexual暗示;
1.2
Viola
第二场结尾也是“commit与wit”“be与see”可见Viola之eloquence与wisdom.
2. 在Viola求captain帮她乔装打扮的言语(line 46、47)中“though that nature with a beauteous wall doth oft close in pollution”很是耐人寻味,希望大神多解读这里哇!
1.3
Sir Toby这个角色真是一出场便令人忍俊不禁,先是说“care's an enemy to life”(悲哀可是要折寿呢!)后面干脆脸皮一厚到底,先是借用homophones(同音异义词)confine,又与侍女Maria插科打诨(默默感慨主仆关系真好),其中“viodegamboy”很妙:注释(21)说这个被解读为是在维多利亚时代音乐与文学中的sexual metaphor,不是很懂其中关联?后来Toby说Andrew记语言是without book,原来这里Sir Toby是表褒实贬Andrew呢!Maria更是毒舌“he hath indeed all, most natural”(傻子都是得天独厚的呢);“he would quickly have the gift of a grave”;Toby 又大言不惭说自己喝酒是“with drinking healths to my niece!”话也变得疯颠拽起“castiliano vulgo”不过具体指wine还是Spanish ducat还有争议;
看到最后两人商业互吹:“the excellent constitution of thy leg, it was formed under the starof a galliard”;两人是“born under Taurus” ♉️金牛星“legs and theighs”又是赤裸裸的sexual innuendoes
1.4
刚开始Viola没有喜悦于迅速得宠,而是“fear his humour or my negligence”可见细腻敏感谨小慎微;后来Orsino派她去找Olivia更是矫揉造作明明“go”就能解决的话非得说“address thy gait”,接着夸Viola像女人比月亮与狩猎女神Diana的lip更柔软红润,“part”这个词又是耐人寻味双重意义:1.nature译为“性情”?2. “role”译为“角色”?
最后旁白中Viola暗自袒露自己对Orsino的爱慕有些突兀又决绝,充满“bareful strife”也十分坚定。
1.5
开场是Maria与Feste的对白. 其中“fear no colour”中“color”与“collar”构成pun,指不畏敌人的旗帜。不过不太懂他们争辩的原因出处?
后来pun“talents”也颇有趣,(allusion from Bible)后又有fool是born/profession fool,dry fool的梗也快被玩坏了;
(line16)俚语Many a good hanging prevents a bad marriage. 可能回照《威尼斯商人》;
(line 21)再后来的Gaskins 臀部是否有sexual desire暗示?后来Feste更是乱点鸳鸯谱撮合Maria与Sir Toby;
“Fool, mad, drown”三个醉酒层次也是很生动;
Maria劝Viola离开时用的hoist hail扬帆(引申为劝客动身离开)Viola怼回去并说自己要hull a little longer。这里可见其机警敏捷,与之前蠢笨的Andrew完全不是一个战斗级别;
后来Olivia问Orsino有多爱自己用了“chapter of his bosom”这让我回想起在Orsino派Viola去袒露心扉时说自己“book of my soul”,可见前后呼应之完美;
最后Olivia表现自己被Voila扣动心弦的句子很美:“with an invisible and subtle stealth to creep in at mine eyes,”“fear to find Mine eyes too great aflatterer for my mind. ”这里又让我想到了之前的“肾心脑三位一体”所谓eyes are the throne of reason and mind is the throne of emotion. 最后干脆交给命运裁决“fate,show thy force; ourselves we do not owe. ”
2.
2.1
从这段中读出了两人对航海术语都是信手拈来:bound;determinate voyage;提及malignancy of my fate一是指命运多舛二是自己的病疾,且前者是占星学视角,应了注释中的“heavens ties in with the motif of time, fate, and fortune.”
问题:line 19.20注释称“with such estimable wonder”是逆序法(hysteron-proteron),为什么呢?
注释10与11有趣的很:先是说Viola是sensitive to Olivia's predicament,dissembles in the presence of Malvolio这里是说因为Malvolio的出现,Viola确信Olivia已经沦陷. Malvolio 一句“peevishly threw”活脱脱一个善玩文字游戏的调皮鬼;line 22的“I am the man”应该怎么解读呢?后半部分更是直抒胸臆,颇有”女人何苦为难女人”之感,Viola女扮男装深爱自己的主人,又要为了主人讨得另一个女人的苦情欢心,Viola的同情与共情从两人升华到了女人,“our frailty is the cause, not we, For such as we are made of, suchwe be!”
2.3
Toby 与 Andrew对话中提及的四元素还挺有趣:fire, air, water, and earth对应人体的choler(黄胆汁象征脾气暴躁), blood(多血象征温和), phlegm(黏液象征冷静), and melancholy(黑胆汁象征忧郁),将人体的微观宇宙与自然的宏观宇宙类比。
“we three”直接嘲讽一番spectator是第三个fool,可惜中文译本翻译成“三星图”且没有注释,少了趣味。
Feste称“Malvolio's nose is no whipstock”鼻子不是鞭柄无法辨出真假无权判决也就无需忌惮,又说“my lady has a white hand”是出身高贵又心地善良,而“the Myrmidons are no bottle-ale houses”不是开劣质酒馆的,这三者之间的联系在哪里呢?
Toby 称歌声“contagious breath”,注释48称其暗指当时的瘟疫,49又说这是hear through the nose,这是通感(synaesthesia)吗?
Andrew称自己是“dog at a catch”取“dog”一词的谚语“a dog at all things”与“catch”指“联唱”来自夸是唱轮流歌的好手,像小狗扑食一样得心应手,Feste直接讽一句“some dogs will catch well. “取“dog”与“catch”的直意,这两个双关梗玩的不错。
Maria上场便称他们仨是caterwauling猫儿叫春似的嚎,比喻过于形象;Toby反驳说my lady's a Cataian, we are politicians. Andrew称Toby的玩笑开得很好,不过“I do it more natural”用的形容词而非副词“naturally”也回照了第一幕说与生俱来的蠢蛋,妙哉。
Maria欲出妙计欺骗Malvolio时称自己若是不“gull him into an ayword”其中“gull”意为欺骗,这里既是她对Malvolio的又是Toby对Andrew的,两人各自心怀鬼胎。
后来Maria更是毒舌本质“a time-pleaser, an affectioned ass, that cons state without book andutters it by great swarths. “
Toby“I smell a device.”
听到Toby秀Maria对自己的爱,Andrew酸酸的说了一句“I was adored once, too. “似乎颇有故事哦?
2.4
Orsino描述自己的爱情是“unstaid and skittish in all motions else, save in the constant imageof the creature that is beloved. “简直就是渣男浪子回头的自我陶醉,Viola的回应也很值得回味:“an echo to the seat where love is throned.”回应第一幕中的“throne”实在是“苦情脉脉”。后来又劝Viola找一个比自己大一点的男人,因为“our fancies are more giddyand unfirm, more longing, wavering, sooner lost and worn than women’s are. “”Women are as roses, whose fair flower, being once displayed, dothfall that very hour. “简直就是《诗经·卫风·氓》中“桑之未落,其叶沃若。于嗟鸠兮,无食桑葚!于嗟女兮,无与士耽!士之耽兮,犹可说也。女之耽兮,不可说也。”的真实写照呀!
后来小丑的歌曲凄凉婉转,“cypress”与“yew”
都是象征mourning的意象,读着就像是在把自己与自己无疾而终的爱情葬于墓冢,无人问津。
Orsino欲再次遣Viola去替自己诉衷肠,可说词却俗套的很(个人见解)更像是求爱模版而非真情流露,Viola小心翼翼试探其心思后Orsino又大言不惭自谄其爱如滔滔海水🌊汹涌澎湃激烈具有吞噬一切的力量,一般女子怎能招架得住,她们的爱只是“appetite”,“no motion of the liver but the palate”即no impulse(emotion)这里指throne of the passions.
Viola的苦情在这里怕是到了高潮,更是“concealment like a worm in the bud feed on her damask cheek. Shepines in thought and with a green and yellow melancholy she sat like Patienceon a monument, smiling like a grief. “其中melamcholy对应之前的四元素说,或许形容Patience的最好的表达可能就是“smiling”了吧。
Viola这段迸发出的饱满情感让我想到了望夫石,想到了圣经中“爱是恒久忍耐”的箴言,更是想到了《简爱》中那句“it is my spirit that addresses your spirit; just as if both hadpassed through the grave, and we stood at God’s feet, equal - as we are!“(跨越坟墓站在上帝的面前,我们的灵魂是平等的。)
2.5
Fabian的出场照应了Maria妙计的“a fool of three”,称自己若是错过这出好戏就“let me be boiled to death with melancholy”中文版译为“把我用忧郁的胆汁煮死”其中“melancholy”已是频繁出现,是黑胆汁象征忧郁,“boiled”(煮)与“biled”(胆汁)玩了一组homophones梗,翻译也很形象;
Toby回应中“sheep-biter”注释提供一种解读为“dissembler”(伪善者)的无礼词,并与merchants变为usurer类比,称“满嘴经文的清教徒”,中文被译为“乱咬人的恶狗”也是十分有趣味;
Toby呼Maria为“little villain”颇有“小坏蛋”的调戏之意,又调侃其娇小身材,中文译为“小始作俑者”实在有些失趣;
Maria戏谑Malvolio为“trunt”,“the trunt must be caught with tickling”(中文注释:抓鳟鱼的方法之一是碰触其腮下搔其痒处。)这里的谚语形容“use flattery to beguile a person”想想用谄媚的方式欺骗一个人与挠痒处来让“rubbed and clawed”的鳟鱼上钩,太妙;
Fabian称Malvolio的自作多情是“rare turkey-cock”“how he jets under his advanced plumes”真是活脱脱的一只趾高气昂又自命不凡的公鸡🐓;
Malvolio的意淫中也是令人爆笑不止:先是“sitting in my state”中文译为“华盖下的宝座”,身着“branched violet gown”,“day-bed where I have left Olivia sleeping”更是赤裸裸的sexual suggestion;“kinsman Toby”干脆与自己称兄道弟“extend my hand to him quenchingmy familiar smile with an austere regard of control”简直可以用臭不要脸来形容了;“amend your drunkenness”仿佛Malvolio不是娶Olivia而是成了凯撒!
要上钩时“Now is the woodcock near the gin!”
Malvolio读信前看到信上字母“c, u, t”和”great P”,注释称这里是double entendres(双关)既是指P的大写印刷又是P本身比其他字母要大许多;
“fustian”被用来形容矫揉造作,本意为代替丝绸面料的粗厚棉布;
Toby总喜欢用动物来形容人:先是brock(🦡獾)后staniel(红隼);
Toby称“he is now at a cold scent”是“嗅不到气味”的回照,Febian回应到“Sowter will cry upon't for all this, though it be as rank as a
fox. ”中文译为“索特猎犬还是会吠的,尽管臭得像狐狸。”也是精妙;
“Ay”,”I”,”eye”三关实在是妙;
信中“yellow stocking”注释为“symbol of love”经常在戏剧中被使用来“indicate marriage and jealousy after marriage”(line127)
“cross-gartered”可能是“a hopeful as opposed to a despairing lover”,这与Malvolio宣称“every reason impels him to conclude that Olivia loves him”相吻合。这一对opposite mode of dress是sign of an unhappy lover;后文中他也称自己要“strange , stout, in yellowstockings and cross-garnered”
此后又一处双关“thou art made(by fortune/Fortuna)既是Olivia的财富又是Fortuna幸运女神;
Toby称Maria为gull-catcher,赞美“set thy foot o'my neck”中文译为“把贵足踩我脖子上”即五体投地,十分贴切;后愿“play my freedom at tray-trip and become thy bondslave”最后甚至愿随她“to the gate of Tartar, thou mostexcellent devil of wit!”

3.1
Viola称Feste的描述“wanton”这个词颇有深意,中文译成了“不正经”, 注释称其意为“wayward”,此处Viola的措辞是有sexual弦外之音,后面Feste也称“to dally with that word might make my sister wanton” 后来冒出一个paradox:”I can yield you none without words, and words are grown so false, Iam loath to prove reason with them. “(即不用文字的话解释不清,但文字又虚假所以不想用文字来证明。)
Feste否认自己是Olivia的小丑🃏,因为“fools are like husbands as pilchards are to herrings—the husband’s the bigger. “中文译为“傻子之于丈夫,就像小沙丁鱼之于大鲱鱼,丈夫就是那更大的傻子。”就像铜之于金,银合金之于银,颇有小巫见大巫之意,把丈夫这个角色狠狠嘲讽一番。
Feste干脆直接嘲讽Viola。称“foolery does walk about the orb like the sun, it shines everywhere. ”愚蠢像太阳沿着轨道照耀每一处,还暗指她才是主人的小丑,谄媚地围着主人转,用“wisdom”反语。
Feste称“in his next commodity, send thee a beard.” I am almost sick for one.”
之后两人更是妙语连珠:Feste称”a pair of these have bred”中“bred”(produce more)既是指再来一枚硬币成对,又是把这枚硬币拿去投资;Viola的回应:”being kept together and put to use”中“use”既是指拿去投资,又是暗含sexual activity. Feste又将自己比作“Lord Pandarus of Phrygia to bring a Cressida to this Troilus”这里讽刺性地借用了Chaucer作品“Troilus and Criseyde”,其中Panderous是Phrygia的叔叔也是其与情人Troilus的传信人,表面上是把Phrygia带到Troilus身边指之前的“硬币成对”,暗指帮助Viola与Orsino成对,不管哪种都是讨更多硬币来赏。Viola懂其意,称是“well-begged”, 又被Feste否认因为他是“begging but a beggar”,挖苦Viola也不过是乞丐—根据Testament of Criseyde,后来Criseyde得了麻风病(leper)乞讨度日;后又称不会传达“element”,这里是双关来嘲讽Viola,既是指自然界四元素fire, air, water, and earth,暗示自己辨不出Viola的庐山真面目;又是指其“element”本身有的“sky”的含义,称自己不要用“element”来代替“welkin”(sky),因为已经“overworn”(似乎是预示后文中Malvolio的高调陈词)另外注释中有一点很提纲挈领:throughout TN Shakespeare comments on affectations of diction bymeans of Orsino's stilted language, Viola's variability, Sir Toby'swaywardness, Sir Andrew's inadequacy and Feste's nice dallying.
Feste“wise enough to play a fool”颇有mockepic之感,称其挖苦时“observe their mood on whom he jests, The quality of persons, and thetime;”即“看人下菜碟”,其中“quality”既是“nature”(本质)又是“rank”(地位). 最后将其比作“haggard, check at every feather That comes before his eye.”
Andrew飙法语洗白第一幕说的语言白痴形象,“encounter the house”与“taste your legs”更是体现出Toby的做作斯文;Viola巧妙地用understand做文字游戏:“My legs do better understand me, sir, than I understand what youmean…”
Olivia说“Twas never merry world Since lowly feigning was called compliment.”中文译为“好时光一去不返,自从奴颜婢膝被当作谦恭有礼。”注释提供解释是嘲讽清教徒的谚语“there were so many puritans, there was so much preaching”;听到这Viola立刻改口不提“servant”而改为“he is yours”;
Olivia在袒露心声时“beseech you”主语丢掉也体现了其背叛之前的矜持,后称“Have you not set mine honour at the stake, And baited it with allth'unmuzzled thoughts That tyrannous heart can think?”又露骨地说“a cypress, not a bosom, Hides myheart”这两个暗喻把自己汹涌的情感与Viola 的冷酷无情视觉化。最后干脆“If one should be a prey, how much the better To fall before the lionthan the wolf! ”让我想到了《暮光之城》也有将爱情比作是狮子🦁️爱上了羊羔🐑的情话。
Olivia苦苦追问Viola对自己的情感时Viola的回应太妙:”That you do think you are not what you are.”有Three layers of meaning: (1) you do notconsider that you are a noblewoman; (2) you do not imagine you are in love witha woman, and therefore (3) you do not believe you are out of your mind. 不过此时的Olivia只可get到了第三个含义认为自己是lovesick已被爱情冲昏头脑: “If I think so, I think the same of you.” 此后Viola只得承认“Then think you right: I am not what I am.”
Olivia沉醉于Viola的冷峻时称其“contempt and anger of his lip”简直就是“邪魅一笑”的翻版!
Toby称Andrew是“dear venom”此处为metonymy(转喻),这里以因代果,形容Andrew的抱怨话像是因吃了毒物🤢而发出的,中文译为了“气哼哼地”虽是可爱却少了一点霸气;
另 “upon the oaths of judgement and reasonAnd they have been grand-jurymen since before Noah was a sailor.” 1) logical and legal and (2)abstract and concrete terms.
Fabian
先是一串气势排比“to exasperate you, to awake your dormouse valour, to put fire inyour heart, and brimstone in your liver. “其中dormouse是冬眠鼠🐭用来表示蛰伏的勇气有点可爱、另外激起心(emotion)中的怒火与肾(passion)中硫磺的形容也十分贴切,我查字典发现“fire and brimstone”可以在现代被用来形容“炼狱般的磨难”;
后又让Andrew想些“excellent jests”如“fire-new from the mint”to“accost her”其中“mint”照应之前一直提到的硬币,“accost”也是第一幕便由Andrew提起;
“double gilt of this opportunity”形容时机被镀了两层黄金🏵一样珍贵,很形象;
Andrew“challenge me the count's youth to fight”注释称“me”是“ethical dative”表达同情之意,为什么呢?
纵然是满纸荒唐言到“as many lies in thy sheet of paper, although the sheet were bigenough for the bed of Ware(传说中可装下十二人的豪华大床🛏️) in England”也要写,两个双关:“gall”双关既是=bile胆汁暗示暴躁💢,又是字面意思橡树上可用于制墨水的增生物🌳;“goose-pen”鹅毛笔通常写作quill-pen,这里Toby故意用goose,既表示“鹅🦢”,也指“傻瓜”,即used by a goose,暗指Andrew是个傻子。
后面Toby欲写信送信(虽然后来认识到了写的难度放弃了), 还说若是“find so much blood in his liver as will clog the foot of a flea”就要吃剩下的身体,以此嘲讽Andrew一点骨气都没有连盖住跳蚤的脚的血都找不到,虽是合理夸张,但似乎画风一转,这cannibalism很是血腥啊!
Antonio尽职地表现了慈母般无微不至的gay gay关怀,一连串形容词“to a stranger, unguided, ... inhospitable”深刻体现了“sentimental-romantic milieu of thetwo households”(这就是爱“willing love”啊 小声说
Antonio有一句话颇有深意:“The offence is not of such a bloody nature, Albeit the quality ofthe time and quarrel Might well have given us bloody argument.”
Olivia欲寻Cesario,忿忿地说“youth is bought more oft than begged or borrowed”,引自谚语“better to buy than to borrow.”其中'beg' meaning (1) to ask alms求救济(2)
to petition the Court of Wards for thecustody of a (wealthy) minor.
(1)taken over by the devil or (2) mad.
先是洋洋得意穿上惨不忍睹的yellow stockings cross-gartered, 还说这的确会令自己“sad”因为“does make some obstruction in the blood”不过不要紧因为“Please one, and please all.”后又自称“not black in my mind, though yellowin my leg”,“腿虽是黄色,心却不黑呢”这里指自己“not amelancholic (from an excess of black bile)(因为有过度黑胆汁而忧郁);最后还妄想“sweetheart, and I’ll come to thee.”
“lime”(石灰) 这里Malvolio用来形容自己“捕获”了Olivia,像是“caught her like a bird entangled by lime, a glutinous substance.” 表现出牢牢粘住自己的心上人的视觉效果;
“scruple”在“no dram of a scruple”中,“scruple”是药衡单位“英分”,“dram”也是形容少量,表现极少之意,同时“scruple”也有“顾忌”之意,也是可用来双关的好词。
先是说他“bawcock”“chuck”“biddy”不男不女,又是”foul-collier” 'Like will to like, quoth the devil to the collier.' As a dealer inpit-coal, a collier was assumed to be like the devil, black in heart as well asin appearance.”
到最后干脆要像对待疯子一样“have him in a dark room and bound”(关进小黑屋),“crown thee for a finder of madmen ”(“疯子的陪审员”)
Andrew🤪
Andrew称自己的挑战书🧾是“much vinegar and pepper”,Febian问够不够“saucy”,这里(1) salty(有“bitter”“咸涩”之意), (2) impertinent. 'salt scorn' (形容语言有趣但略粗俗的).
信的内容毫无逻辑不说,Febian更是频繁宣称这不会让他们吃官司:“keeps you from the blow of the law”,“keep o'th'windy side of the law.”
最后Toby叮嘱他要“努力咒骂”🤬“swear horrible; for it comes to pass oft that a terrible oath, witha swaggering accent sharply twanged off, gives manhood more approbation thanever proof itself would have earned him. ”简直把荒唐感推向极致。
Toby不愿作送信人,称既会“drive the gentleman (as I know his youth will aptly receive it) intoa most hideous opinion of his rage, skill, fury, and impetuosity”又会“so fright them both that they willkill one another by the look, like cockatrices. ”
“refuse it not;it hath no tongue to vex you”是爱情让Olivia卑微如尘埃,小心翼翼中触碰。
“A fiend like thee might bear my soul to hell. “
Toby上场即要Viola武装好,表面好心相劝实则步步紧逼充满挑衅讽刺:“dismount thy tuck”“dismount”用来形容大炮,“tuck”却是小轻剑,这种手法可理解为一种oxymoron(矛盾逆喻);
Andrew是“unhatched”:“unhacked”/“never drawn from its scabbard”(虽然我们读者都知道是后者🤫)“carpet knights”注释称是“the basest cowards”有点类似小打小闹的天台打架;
在询问挑战者的情况时,Viola用“What is he?”来问Toby,此前也一直是用简单的“What is he”表示询问quality与rank,但却用“What manner of man is he?”
故意用“firago”(“virago”泼妇)形容Cesario,还吹嘘自己“had a pass”“stuck-in”zhongz简直武侠小说即视感,又称Cesario曾是“fencer to the sophy”吓得Andrew惊慌失措要把骏马🐎“Grey Capilet”送来求情,Toby则心怀鬼胎暗爽“ride your horse as well as I ride you”后者是“make a fool of you”,看这里时Toby向观众挤眉弄眼的样子😏都可以在文本中感受到,不得不敬佩莎翁的文字实在是真。
Toby称Antonio是“undertaker”: (1) one who takes on responsibility for something; (2) one whotakes on a fight; (3) one who meddles in another's business.
Antonio则是即便伤透了心💔也先称其“most venerable worth,did I devotion”,而后才哀怨“In nature there's no blemish but the mind :
None can be called deformed but the unkind.
Virtue is beauty, but the beauteous-evilAre empty trunks, o'er-flourished by the devil.”(品性毫无瑕疵,除了心灵污秽。
最后Viola意识到自己被错认成哥哥Sebastian,称Antonio是“he believes himself”,注释称“he himself believes(that I am Sebastian)”但中文译本是“他言之凿凿,似乎是取literal meaning他相信自己所言,与原文有些出入?
得知Sebastian还活着,Viola认为“Tempests are kind, and salt waves fresh in love. ”(暴风雨变慈悲,海浪也因爱而不咸。)意境太美🌸
(如果不是知道结局的话,我暗暗希望Antonio可以与Viola在一起的,两个真真的好人。)

先是Feste错认Sebastian为Viola:
Sebastian要Feste“vent thy folly”(别发傻)其中“vent”也是语义丰富,这里是“get rid of”,但后文中都是取“utter发出”之意;“ungird thy strangeness”: “stop being outlandish”(收起你的荒诞不经)。其中“strange”:act like a foreigner/aloof/unfamiliar,我认为这里三个意思均可;“foolish Greek”中“Greek”既是“听不懂的”又是“愚笨”,这里也是两种都可以;“well-fleshed”,像只被喂养生肉的hawk/hound,满腔斗志;“tempt me further”(得寸进尺,既是“测试我”又是“激怒”);“malapert blood”(“放肆”的血)像是撒欢儿🎉一样造短语
“started one poor heart of mine”中“started”既是“roused”又是“startled”,扣动心弦的朦胧;
Sebastian形容对于这种天降美事(“relish”),自己似是“fancy still my sense in Lethe steep”其中”Lethe”(river of forgetfulness)颇似中国古代神话中孟婆守的忘川河,之前在读夜莺颂中第一节便是“the Lethe-wards had sunk”来表现迷惘眩晕之感。
4.2
先是Maria出计要Feste伪装成Sir Topas the curate,注释称“topaz”似是“follows the course of the moon,因此against the Lunatik passion”克服了疯癫🌙,想起“luna”(moon)一词也是因为古代人们认为发疯是受月亮控制了,与疯有关的词由此演变即lunatic,lunacy;
委屈的Malvolio求Topas去找小姐,脱离“in hideous darkness”,“as a hell”,后Feste将“darkness”转化为“ignorance”(愚昧),Malvolio称“though ignorance were as dark as hell”,让我想起Plato's Allegory of the Cave(洞穴隐喻)也是将人类无知愚昧的精神状态喻为在阴暗洞穴中;最后Toby离去时对Maria说“come by and by to my chamber”似乎两人已定情🎎

Sebastian心心念念Antonio,称他的意见于自己是“golden service”中文译为“金玉良言”很是贴切;后称“my soul disputes well with my sense”(自己没疯)但是Olivia也不可能是疯了
因为据自己观察,她若是疯了,“she could not sway her house🏠 , command her followers, Takeand give back affairs and them dispatch, With such a smooth, discreet, andstable bearing”其中“dispatch”很形象地表现Olivia作为女主人的精明能干,敏捷机智,同时Sebastian观察她也暗示时间的流逝,为下文铺垫;Viola直接带着牧师来催婚,以息“my most jealious and too doubtful soul”最后Olivia以一对couplet结尾,似乎是重拾自己的尊贵一般,尾韵“shine”与“mine”完美,也少了惊慌失措患得患失的感觉。

Fabian称“This is to give a dog and in recompense desire my dog again”此是allusion(关于Elizabeth I的宫廷轶事:她向她的族人Dr Boleyn要了一条狗,assuring him that he could have whatever he desired
in recompense. 但Dr. Boleyn称“I pray you give me my dog again',有点像“刚吊了人的胃口却又绝口不提此事了”的意思)
Orsino上场:
问小丑们是不是Olivia的人,Feste称他们是“trappings”(“superficial decoration”)是马饰,为Olivia增添风采气魄,颇有boastful之意;
后来Feste说出了一句paradox: “the better for my foes, and the worse for my friends.”(“敌人让我变得更好,朋友让我更糟。”)注释称Feste这句话是起源于其应用了“Latin grammatical rule that two negatives make an affirmative to anEnglish construction, and from the multiple senses his words convey.”似乎是“双重或两个否定表示肯定”,但是这句话中以及下一段的“if yourfour negatives make your two affirmatives, why then, the worse for my friendsand the better for my foes. ”之中都没有否定词,这“双重否定表肯定”“四个否定答复”是指什么呢?
Feste轻松从Orsino口袋里赚走两枚金币。
“Put your grace in your pocket”其中玩起了“grace”的双关( 1 ) favour (2) the address proper to a duke.
Antonio
Orsino称在战场上时Antonio是besmeared as black as “Vulcan”(罗马神话中的祝融星🌟,希腊神话中的Hephaestus,火神,众神的铁匠),一连串贬义词“baubling vessel”“shallow draught and bulk unprizable”先是忿忿损了Antonio一番,又忍不住赞赏他能“scathful grapple”with the most noble bottom of our fleet, 即便是That very envy, and the tongue of loss,也Cried fame andhonour on him. (Antonio never yet was thief or pirate, Though I confess, on baseand ground enough, Orsino's enemy. )
后委屈巴巴地称自己是“witchcraft”着了巫术,这里既是说自己被Sebastian所吸引,又是暗含Olivia 沉醉于Cesario;对Sebastian痴心一片,“His life I gave him, and did thereto add
My love without retention, or restraint,All his in dedication....Did I expose myself, pure for his love”可是他却是个大骗子,翻脸不认人:“his false cunning (Notmeaning to partake with me in danger) Taught him to face me out of his acquaintance,And grew a twenty-years' removed thing While one would wink; ”最后解释清“denied me mine own purse, Which Ihad recommended to his use Not half an hour before.”被问及Sebastian何时到此处时,Antonio的回答很是暧昧“No int'rim, not a minute'svacancy, Both day and night did we keep company.
Olivia
Orsino拍马屁“heaven walks on earth.”然后把疯言疯语的Antonio赶下去;
后来Olivia无视Orsino,责备Cesario不守信,“my lord”👱在Olivia口中指Cesario,是丈夫的意思,Viola紧接着也用my lord,指Orsino;Olivia不愿再重调老弹,称是“fat and fulsome”用了alliteration头韵,注释也应景地用了头韵“distasteful and disgusting”;Orsino怒不可遏,“To whose ingrate and unauspicious altars My soul the faithful’st off' rings have breathed out That e'er devotion tendered! ”“向你不领情的、不吉利的祭坛上,我的灵魂献上了最忠诚的祭礼,这是从未敬献过的!”又是最高级“faithfulest”又是“ever”加强语气,可见Orsino十分接受不了自己高高在上用情至深却这般碰壁;这时,Viola在一旁静静唤道“Even what it please my lord that shall become him.” 这句话让我很触动,Viola对Orsino之爱深沉而卑微;Orsino又说“Like to th'Egyptian thief”引自Greek romance Ethiopica by Heliodorus (slay a beloved captive whenhe despairs of his own life.) Olivia, “And that I partly know the instrument That screws me from my trueplace in your favour, Live you the marble-breasted tyrant still. ”其中“instrument”注释称是 'agent'; 字面意思是tool,这里暗示torture;“marble-breasted”是metonymy(转喻),用铁石心肠来指代Olivia,讽刺的是,Olivia之前埋怨Cesario是 'a heart of stone'. 颇有一物降一物的感觉(此外《李尔王》中也曾有 'marble-hearted fiend' 的形容)
Orsino
“will I tear out of that cruel eye Wherehe sits crowned in his master's spite.”(我要要让他远离那残忍的眼睛,在那里他称王而他主人却招恨.”)不过倒也真实直说自己“my thoughts are ripe in mischief”;最后以一个绝妙的analogy收束“I'll sacrifice the lamb that I do love, To spite a raven's heartwithin a dove.”(注释解读为“contrasting the inward nature of a person with his outwardappearance”形容Olivia像鸽子🐦表面纯洁却是乌鸦的恶毒心肠,所以自己要把Cesario这只无辜小羔羊🐑带走来折磨她)Viola则是直言“To do you rest, a thousand deaths would die.” ;“After him Ilove More than I love these eyes, more than my life”“我爱他胜过你的双眸,胜过我自己的生命。”Olivia急得找神父作证、直呼husband,误以为Cesario是没有足够勇气僭越“basement of thy fear that makes thee strangle thy propriety”,鼓励其“take thy fortunes up. ”
作证浪漫💕的很:“A contract of eternal bond of love, Confirmed by mutual joinder ofyour hands, Attested by the holy close of lips, Strengthened byth'interchangement of your rings” (一份缔结永恒爱情的合约, 由你俩手挽手共同印证。神圣的亲吻是它的誓言,戒指交换让它更为坚定。)三个被动的排比使得神圣感满满❤️;称时间🕙是“toward my grave I have travelled but two hours. ”用“朝着坟墓行进”来描述也是可爱得很;
Orsino称Cesario是“dissembling cub”其中“dissembling”已是反复出现,既是disguise appearance又是conceal nature,我认为是一个可以概括全剧的核心词(此外Feste伪装时也用了此词)“cub”是幼兽🐶,小混蛋; “When time hath sowed a grizzle on thy case? ”(“等时光在你的皮囊上播下星星灰发?”)“case”既是“body”又是“skin”,后者通常是“case of a fox”,照应了前一句的“cub”;“trip”(stumble)为双关,physical+moral;
Andrew
“coxcomb”中文注解为“傻丑(fool)的帽子,形如公鸡鸡冠,在此引申为“头”,想想一头傻公鸡🐓红红的头流血的样子);形容Sebastian是“he's the very devil incardinate”,其中“incarnate”(化身)都不够,非得用“incardinate”像是devil到骨子里肉里一样,咬牙切齿恶狠狠的样子活灵活现;Viola一脸懵逼;
Toby与Feste🤡上场:
Feste称Toby是“his eyes were set at eight
i'th'morning.”中文译为“他的眼睛定在早晨八点才转动。”很是形象。其中“set”有不同解读1) 'sunk out of sight',2) 'fixed', 3) 'closed', 此外,“setting sun”正好与“eight in the morning”冉冉升起的太阳🌞反差,也是合语境,十分应景;
接下来请欣赏Toby的骂人秀:“an ass-head, and a coxcomb, and a knave, a thin-faced knave, a gull?”
Sebastian
先是Sebastian对Olivia尴尬又不失礼貌的道歉🙇同时还不忘偷偷提醒她刚一起立下的誓言“Pardon me, sweet one, even for the vows
We made each other but so late ago. ”
然后Orsino一句“One face, one voice, one habit, and two persons - A naturalperspective, that is and is not ! ”(一副面孔,一个嗓音,一样装扮,却是两个人。自然的透镜,是又不是!)把剧情推向高潮✨!其中“A natural perspective”(莎翁作品中“perspective”重音在“per”上): “deception or illusion produced by nature, in contrast to that
produced by an optical device called a 'perspective glass(望远镜🔭)'(the intent of each being to deceive the 👁 瞒过人的肉眼)这里用来体现兄妹俩“fashion, colour, ornament”
都极其相似这一精妙设计更像是自然的鬼斧神工而非人为设计;
Antonio的形容是“An apple cleft in two is not more twin Than these two creatures.”自己被这两副面孔害惨了,🍎苹果切两瓣也没有这么像;Sebastian形容妹妹是被“blind waves and surges had devoured”其中“blind”也是personification;接着问询Viola姓甚名谁也是礼貌至极“Of charity, what kin are you to me ?
What countryman? What name? What parentage?”
Viola以为是兄长的“spirits come and frighten us”时,Sebastian称自己“A spirit I am indeed, But am in that dimension grossly clad”
(我确实是鬼魂,但是却被血肉深深包裹。)这样来形容自己的存在很是耐人寻味,似乎是因为灾难幸存而看破世俗之感;而后的”I should my tears let fall upon your cheek, And say, 'Thricewelcome, drowned Viola.' “读出一种本以为是“千里孤坟,无处话凄凉”却到“纵使相逢应不识”的岑寂,喜悦之余也有对命途多舛的无奈;之后Viola强调父亲👨是在自己13岁时去世的,注释称这里是有意为之,由于整个故事与父亲角色并无关联,此处是为证实Sebastian是要比Olivia年长;Viola要Sebastian先去找captain证实自己的女儿身👧🏻然后再团圆,又称自己是“was preserved — to serve this noble count.”其中“preserved to serve”是an example of repetition of the stem of a word which is then used ina different form (paregmenon同源词并列“serve” or polyptoton叠叙法), a rhetorical device much favoured in the 1590s and following).这里一石二鸟:“call attention both to Viola'shappy reunion with Sebastian and to her devotion to Orsino”同时还有音律和谐带来的听觉享受:“delight the ear by thederived sound and to stir the mind”例子🌰还有“the wisdom of the wise”以及line264-265的“extract”与“distract”;
Sebastian与Orsino为团圆而「双催婚」Sebastian对Olivia称是“nature to her bias drew in that”(“都是造化根据她的偏好造成的”)注释称是“nature made you follow your own bent in being attracted to adisguised form of myself.“(造化导致你被另一个我着迷)个人认为这里Sebastian或多或少有些以自我为中心,理由是明明Olivia先认识的Viola,为其谈吐优雅气质出众所吸引而后误把他当成Viola才会与其结婚🎎,但他却说成Viola是“a disguised form of myself”仿佛对自己太过自信了一些,此外注释称这metaphor是the game of bowls,不理解出处;
之后Sebastian干脆劝Olivia也没吃亏“You are betrothed both to a maid and man”也算是一种变相“重婚”了;Orsino先是神助攻「情敌手下的哥哥」直说Sebastian是“right noble is his blood.”然后又脑筋一转“If this be so - as yet the glassseems true -”最后暗下决心“I shall have share in this most happy wreck. “Orsino仍是自我中心,明明是造化弄人,导致兄妹迟迟不敢相认,他却只想着要从“the most happy wreck”中分得一杯羹;对Viola称“Boy👦🏻, thou hast said to me a thousand times Thounever shouldst love woman like to me.”;Viola也是信誓旦旦:“keep as true in soul As doth that orbed continent the fire Thatsevers day from night.”(真实得就像那个天体火球让白昼和黑夜分明。)其中“orbed continent”具体所指“(1) the sun, (2) the Ptolemaic sphere and (3) the firmament(sky)有争议; ”由于“spherical container (i.e. the sun) doth (keep, preserve, andcherish) its fire🔥 , “fire”指(1) the element of the sun and (2) the sun itself. ”莎翁作品中曾多次出现将太阳比作火(球),这里Viola形容自己的爱💓如烈日🌞般真实,太阳分割白昼黑夜不仅体现她的爱情如一团火般炽热,且迸发得自然而势不可挡;Orsino拍定:“Give me thy hand”(a symbolic gesture of marriage)
🃏小丑们上场之「勿忘我的黄丝袜」
Olivia称Malvolio是“extracting frenzy of mine own”,其中“extracting”与上句“distract”音律和谐,不过也有学者认为应是“exacting”来表现之前Olivia自称如Malvolio一般失心疯;Feste称Malvolio是“holds Belzebub at the stave's end”译为“他已远离魔鬼👹”,其中“Belzebub”源自拉丁文,是希伯来语“lord of flies”(蝇王)的翻译,犹太教、伊斯兰教与基督教都将其视为魔鬼/撒旦/堕落天使,Golding的《蝇王》的取名起源于此,实在是贴切👍🏻;
Feste送信:“a madman's epistles are no gospels, so it skills not much when theyare delivered.”其中“'epistles' (specified as 'epistles of love' at 2.3.131) as (1)letters and (2) New Testament Epistles, and on 'gospels' as (1) the first fourbooks of the New Testament and (2) unquestionable truths,这句是改编谚语' All is not gospel that cometh outof his mouth';Olivia要Feste读信✉️,Feste回复“Look then to be well edified when the fool delivers the madman.”(傻子传达疯子的话,这其中大有讲究!)“deliver”在这里既是“speaks for”又可以是前文“delivered“表示的“relate to”/“transfer”最有意思的可能是取“relate to”的词义,不过不太能译出意境;Feste非要读出Malvolio的腔调(vox),Olivia的“read i'thy right wits”等同于后一句的“to read his wits right is to read thus' ,这里是hyperbaton(倒装法)为搞笑;
Malvolio信中措辞大有管家风范,毕恭毕敬:“...Think of me as you please. I leave my duty a little unthoughtof...”

Malvolio
不过Olivia还算公正,“But when we know the grounds, and authors of it, Thou shalt be boththe plaintiff and the judge Of thine own cause.”Febian也坦白闹剧始作俑者,不过随后又嘲讽Malvolio,似是Febian因第一幕中Malvolio的蔑视使其燃起复仇之心“And thus the
whirligig of time brings in his revenges.”;Orsino连称“golden time convents”(吉时到来)其中”golden = (1) auspicious and (2)
precious(吉利+ 珍贵); time = (1) occasion and (2) season(场合 + 时节). These multiple significances serve to evoke earlier motifs - thetransitory nature of youth and beauty, the reliance on time to resolvesituations - and also to evoke the antique ' golden world 'of idylliccontentment(田园式满足).”;改口叫Olivia“sweet sister”,称Viola为“mistress, and his fancy's queen.“(夫人兼梦幻女王”)译文👍🏻;
这段词让我想起一首歌的歌词“seven years”,同样是将一个人的一生用这种易懂却隽永的方式描绘,深入人心;
其中第三诗节的“bed”既可以是醉倒,又可以是病倒😷,个人觉得后者解读更合理,注释中的解读引用的“Thus if a man dies in his infancy, it is said, he has only brokenhis fast in this world; if he dies in his youth, he has left us at dinner; butat three score and ten 'it is bedde time'”委婉语(euphemism)也是十分可爱;最后两句“But that's all one, our play is done, And we'll strive to please youevery day.”有些令人唏嘘不已,类似“show must go on”。
