When: 1814
Where: Baltimore, Maryland
Who: Francis Scott Key
What:
The War of 1812 had taken a serious turn for the Americans with the destruction of Washington DC and the impending attack upon Baltimore.  To get to the city, however, the British had to destroy Fort McHenry, one of the keys to the city’s defense. At the climax of that battle, local lawyer Francis Scott Key penned the words to his poem DEFENCE OF FORT MCHENRY.

Why

significant

During the siege of Baltimore, Key was inspired by the scene of the flag still flying over the fort during the heaviest bombardment.  With the fort still intact, the British opted to withdraw from their attack, ultimately moving on to New Orleans and defeat.  Key’s words were later set to music and ultimately became the national anthem: THE STAR SPANGLED BANNER.
