When: December 10, 1898

What: the Spanish-American War formally ended by the Treaty of Paris. As a result, the United States annexed all of Spain's colonies outside of Africa, including the Philippines, Guam and Puerto Rico, with the exception of Cuba, which became a U.S. protectorate.

Why significant:

For the U.S.: The war redefined the national identity of the U.S., and greatly enforced the United States' vision of itself as a "defender of democracy" and as a major world power. It also changed the idea of American imperialism in the public's mind, and marked American entry into world affairs. Since the war, the U.S. entered a long and prosperous period of economic and population growth, and technological innovation that lasted through the 1920s.

For Spain: On the other hand, the war greatly reduced the Spanish Empire. The loss of Cuba caused a national trauma because of the affinity of peninsular Spaniards with Cuba, which was seen as another province of Spain rather than as a colony.

For Cuba: Due to the United States' powerful influence diplomatically and militarily, Cuba's status after the war relied heavily upon American actions.
