Rosa Parks
Who: Rosa Parks, a black seamstress, “the mother of the freedom movement”
When: Dec 1, 1955
Where: Montgomery, Alabama
What: She refused to obey the bus driver’s order to give up her seat in the “colored section” to a white passenger, after the whites-only section was filled. She was arrested, which led to the Montgomery Bus Boycott. On November 13, 1956, the Supreme Court ruled that bus segregation was unconstitutional.
Why significant: The Montgomery Bus Boycott set off the civil rights movement. Her act of defiance made her an icon of resistance to racial segregation.
