sex 一般分为男性和女性：man 和 woman或male 和female，
sex前面加“uni”又是什么性别？其实很多我们常见的单词前缀都有“uni”的身影。
例如：universe宇宙、union同盟、uniform制服、unity团结，都有“统一”的含义。
uni-也就是“one”单一的，而unisex 还受united and universal（联合和通用的）的影响，这些词中，有shared（共用、共享）的意思。
所以，unisex后来指：not sex-specific, suitable for any type of sex.（不分性别的）

因此unisex toilet就是男女通用厕所，也可以叫gender-neutral， mixed-sex 或者 all-gender toilets.
这种国外常见的中性厕所设施为跨性别人群和性别二元之外的人提供便利，但也受到关于安全隐私 Security and privacy的争议。
2016 年，上海在开设了第一个男女通用厕所。国内大多无性别厕所是为了解决“男厕所放空、女厕外排队”的难题，而不是专门为了服务性少数群体。但这种设置并没有被民众普遍接受。
