A Study of the

“Half White Sun”

5 Fens Blue

The earliest report, made outside China, concerning the “Half White Sun” Issue was published in Mekeel’s Weekly Stamp News. Then, Lloyd S. Ruland presented some related details on Mekeel’s report in China Clipper, No. 5, Volume 2 in June 1938.

On the other hand, the Issue was first introduced in the paper, titled Record of Jinchaji Border Area Stamps and authored by Huang Shao-Chai, which was published in Chia Hsu Philatelic Journal, Nos. 6&7, Vol. 9, released on July 1, 1939.

The “Half White Sun” 5 fens blue was first seen in Robson Lowe(London), featuring Dr. Warren G. Kauder Collection, on May 3, 1972. There were a mint copy and a used copy on piece. Since then, 12 copies of the blue 5 fens have been offered in seven auctions. In this paper, the author details the respective auction company, date, reference price, realized price and provenance of these copies.

By carefully comparing the details exhibited in the enlarged images of these 12 copies, the author has pinpointed some characteristic features. He then confirms the 12 copies should have been produced using 6 clichés, tentatively designated as Clichés A, B, C, D, E and F.

Finally, the author illustrates two more items which require further identifications. One of them is a cover, bearing the 5 fens, tied by the Fuping dater. The other is a used copy, presented in the September 2014 issue of China Clipper.
