In modern society, people are hankering for quick success. Both theemployers and employees are eager to make a big fortune overnight. How do you think of this mentality? What can we do to correct this mentality?

(Giridhari Swami):First of all, we need to define the word “success” For many persons in the modern world, success is defined by how much wealth one obtains. That mentality is driven by the notion expressed in the equation: wealth = success =happiness. Simply put, one thinks: the more money I have, the happier I will become.”

But is this actually true? If it were, then the wealthiest people would always be the happiest. But often they are not. In fact, as I travel the world,I meet many low to moderate-income persons, who are more satisfied, peaceful and happy than those who possess limitless wealth.

We often mistake the fulfillment of desires to be happiness. But even when we get what we desire, we always want more. Since there is no limit to our desires, our pursuit of pleasure leads to discontent instead of happiness.

According to the ancient Vedic literatures, there is a clear difference between pleasure and happiness. The pursuit of momentary pleasure is called preyas, or activities which are immediately beneficial. Long-term happiness is called shreyas, or activities which are ultimately beneficial, not only to ourselves but to others as well.

Therefore, it is my view that true success and ultimate happiness can be attained only if one learns how to balance the activities of the body, mind and spirit and helps others to do the same.

'If you want happiness for an hour, take a nap. If you want happiness for a day, go fishing. If you want happiness for a year, inherit a fortune. If you want happiness for a lifetime, help somebody.'(Chinese Proverb)

'It is the duty of every living being to perform welfare activities for the benefit of others with his life, wealth, intelligence and words.'(Adi9.43)

If both employers and employees can learn to align their core values with these ancient principles, true prosperity will reign for all. By making the paradigm shiftfrom selfishness to selflessness, work will become a great joy instead of drudgery. Therefore, true success and ultimate happiness can only be found through service to others.

“The best way to find yourself isto lose yourself in the service of others.” (Mahatma Gandhi)
