It's so important to recognise that there is hope because hope is a powerful force, and that's why we don't aim to fill you all with doom and gloom but to help you all realise that you can be part of this hope, that you can go away and make a positive difference.

(n.) feelings of great unhappiness and loss of hope忧郁；愁闷；沮丧
Bergman's films are often full of gloom and despair.伯格曼导演的电影通常都弥漫着忧郁和绝望的气氛。

make a (big) difference = to improve a situation (a lot)（极大地）改善
Exercise can make a big difference to your state of health.锻炼会极大地改善你的健康状况。

But making a difference doesn't necessarily mean doing something radical or drastic, though. You don't have to take a huge leap and found a campaign like we did.

词源effective指的是有效的，高效的，但在这里指的是used when you describe what the real result of a situation is = as a matter of fact
Effectively, we have to start again from scratch.实际情况是，我们不得不重新从零开始
discerning /dɪˈsɜː.nɪŋ/
(adj.)（尤指对式样或质量）有眼光的，好眼力的
