Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as Chinese Moon Festival, takes place at the 15th day of the eighth Chinese lunar month. It is one of the two most important occasions in Chinese calendar (the other is the Spring Festival or the Chinese New Year) and it is an official holiday. It is also a time for family reunion, so people far from home will gaze longingly at the moon and think about their families.
中秋节，又名追月节，农历八月十五。中秋节当属中国人最重要的两大节日之一，另一个就是春节。而且，中秋节是法定节假日。同时，中秋节也是家庭团圆时。所以远在他乡的游子佳节月夜赏月倍思亲。
According to historical records, Mid-Autumn Festival began in the early Tang Dynasty and became prevalent in Song Dynasty. Finally, it was on a par with Spring Festival as one of the most traditional Chinese festivals until the Ming Dynasty and Qing Dynasty. It is not so easy to be popular and acceptable!!!
根据史料记载，中秋节始于唐朝初年，盛行于宋朝，最后于明清作为最传统的中式节日之一，并与春节齐名于世。中秋节成名之路也不容易啊！！！
At present, the most well-known customs are worshiping the moon, eating mooncakes, flying lanterns and enjoying reunion dinner. Maybe, some haven’t done all the four. Moreover, some traditional customs have vanished or are gradually being left behind for some reasons. Here are some vanished customs.
现如今，最知名的中秋节习俗就是敬月赏月、吃月饼、放天灯以及家庭团聚宴。也许，有些人这四大习俗也没完全能遵守。而且，很多传统习俗已逐渐消失或者逐渐被人们出于这样或那样的原因而忽略。接下来我们来了解我们的传统习俗。
Custom 1 Burning Pagodas--for Luck and Good Harvests
In the past, in North China, flying lanterns were very popular on Mid-Autumn Festival’s night. At the same time, people in South China burnt pagodas. The pagoda was built with bricks and tiles. At the very night, wood and bamboo was placed inside, then set fire to light up. According to the tradition, burning pagodas were believed to bring luck for their lives and harvests. The brighter and stronger the fire was, the more luck and the better future.
习俗一：烧塔，预示好运和丰收
从前，北方中秋节夜晚放天灯很盛行。与此同时，南方人烧塔。塔是由砖和瓦片建成的。在中秋月夜，人们在朝塔里丢进木头和竹子后点火燃烧。遵从传统习俗，人们认为烧塔可以为生活和收获带来好运。火越亮越大，带来的好运越多、未来生活越美好。
Custom 2 Touching Pumpkins and Beans--for More Children
In the past, the childless women went to other people’s gardens to “steal” pumpkins and beans at the Mid-Autumn Festival night. And it meant that the women would have a baby soon. More interestingly, they would have a baby boy if they got pumpkins and they would have a baby girl if got beans. For the unmarried ladies, they would also join in the customs and their performances would determine whether their husbands are good or not. Certainly, all garden owners would turn a blind to them and let them go.
习俗二：摸秋（南瓜或扁豆），求子
有旧习，未生育的妇女们在中秋节当晚去他人家中园子里偷南瓜和扁豆。预示他们很快会有小孩儿。更有趣的是，如果她们摸到南瓜，预示会生男孩；如果摸到扁豆，于是会生女孩。而未婚女子当然也不落下，她们的战果预示着他们未来夫婿的好坏。当然，园主对这些肯定是视而不见，听之任之的。
Custom 3 Making Mooncakes—Family Reunion Activity
Mooncake, as the traditional and typical food for Mid-Autumn Festival, is an indispensible part. It is usually round and symbolizes reunion. And mooncakes used to be made at home. But very few people make them at home at present. Commonly, we buy them for the convenience of us. Actually, many of us don’t know how to make mooncakes.
习俗三：制作月饼，家庭团聚活动必备
月饼，中秋节的经典传统必吃食物，过节必备之一。月饼一般都是圆形的，象征着团圆。以前，月饼都是在家自己做的。现在只有少数人在家做月饼。通常，大家为了图方便直接买回家。其实，很多人都不会做月饼。
