42. The fact was that they don’t intend to apologize to the couple.

事实上，他们不打算向那对夫妇道歉。

42. was改成is。The fact is是固定搭配，is并不跟着句子中的时态而发生变化。

例句：The fact is nobody likes to think about death.

事实上，没有人喜欢思考死亡。

结构分析：

The fact是主语，is that they don’t intend to apologize to the couple是系表型谓语，其中is是系动词，that引导表语从句，they是主语，don’t intend是谓语，to apologize to the couple是不定式词组作宾语（to+动词原形apologize作谓语+介词词组to the couple作宾语）。
