During the Qin dynasty, we started to build the Great Wall. The original purpose was to defend against the enemy, but a lot of accidents happened due to the lack of technology at that time and it was constructed with the use of forced labor.
There is a story about a lady, whose husband died because of the conscription to build the Great Wall. She was really sad and desperate; she cried so hard that part of the Great Wall collapsed. Nowadays, a lot of sections of Great Wall we see have been renovated, or some have been damaged or destroyed for various reasons.
The ancient absolute monarchy was really cruel and inhumane. A lot of unfair things happened during that time, and the ancestors sacrificed their lives to build this magnificent architecture, which is also the reason why for a long time it was an object of fascination for foreigners, and the Great Wall is now a revered national symbol and a popular tourist attraction.
