Mussels will check the purity of water from the WSE
More than one and a half million inhabitants of Silesia will drink water, the quality of which in addition to traditional sensors will guard freshwater mussels, which will be located in the Water Treatment Station "Czaniec" in Kobiernice.
Soon, a special biomonitoring system for drinking water called SYMBIO will be installed in one of the most important facilities of the Upper Silesian Water Company, which collects and transmits water coming directly from the mainstream flowing from the Salt mountains. It will immediately inform about any, even the smallest pollution, and most importantly act as a biological early warning system.
At the very end of the water, eight clams of the species sizzled will be placed in a special tank. Each one will be fitted with an electromagnet cooperating with measuring probes, which will record the degree of opening of the shell every second and their natural biorhythm comparable to a human ECG. The sudden closure of the shells of these organisms will immediately signal an unfavorable change in water parameters. Then electronic sensors will react and the system will generate an alarm signal for laboratory services.
The choice of mussels to test water quality is not accidental. Mussels eat by filtration of water. Within an hour, one individual can filter and at the same time analyze 1.5 l of water. These are organisms that harm much more substances than humans. They live only in completely clear waters and almost do not move and their reactions are unambiguous, which facilitates observations.
Mussels will only work for three months when monitoring water from the WSE. This is because they do not get used to the test water and the parameters were as reliable as possible. After this time, the mussels will be replaced with new organisms, and those who have worked will be transported to the lake from which they were previously harvested.
The biomonitoring method itself is one of the most effective and proven technologies to complement water quality research. For the first time, mussels was used in Warsaw water works. Currently, mussels monitor water quality for more than 8 million people in Poland.
