四水[1]含烟故道[2]东,
奇石[3]溢彩入空蒙。
栖霞芦岭如屏秀,
离岸汴桥似月弓。
垓下[4]还温虞女[5]血,
蕲城[6]犹盛乐天[7]风。
何如种柳田庐侧,
日篆梅花[8]佐酒红。

注释:

[1]四水,指流经宿州的四条主要河流,濉河、新汴河、沱河、浍河,它们由西北向东南注入淮河和洪泽湖。

[2]指黄河故道,位于宿州西北的砀山县和萧县。

[3]灵璧石,曾被清朝乾隆皇帝御封为“天下第一石”,主要产于宿州市灵璧县境内。

[4]垓下,古地名,位于安徽省宿州市灵璧县内,是楚汉相争最后决战的战场遗址,被誉为世界七大古战场之一。

[5]虞姬,是楚汉之争时期西楚霸王项羽的爱妾,曾在四面楚歌的困境下一直陪伴在项羽身边,项羽为其作《垓下歌》。相传她的结局是在楚营内自刎,因而“霸王别姬”的悲壮一幕经常在民间剧或历史剧中上演。

[6]宿州简称“蕲”,别称蕲城、宿城,安徽省辖市。

[7]白居易(772年-846年),字乐天,号香山居士,又号醉吟先生,唐代伟大的现实主义诗人。白居易的父亲白季庚为躲避徐州战乱,把家居送往宿州符离。因此,白居易得以在符离度过童年时光。

[8]梅花篆字是指在篆字的基础上,利用光学、距离、方位、色彩、水墨等笔法,将花镶嵌字中,将篆字与梅花巧妙地融为一体。其艺术形式巧夺天工,富有遒劲、淡雅的文化内涵,达到“远看为花,近看为字,花中有字,字里藏花,花字相融”的独特艺术效果。该艺术在宿州地区广泛流传。

Ode to Suzhou(宿州)

Tr. Wu Haohao

East t’ the Ancient Route[1], four rivers[2] flow,

Up to th’ sky, unique stones[3] warmly glow.

Mount Reed backed by clouds spreads its green screen.

Bridge Bian o’er head is a crescent lean.

Yu[4], the belle, died cause of Xiang[5]’s defeat,

Suzhou’s long sung Bai[6]’s poetic feat.

Plant some willows where the warbles are heard,

Have some wine and paint the plum shaped word[7].

[1]It refers to the ancient route of the Yellow River in Dangshan and Xiao, two counties in northwestern Suzhou.

[2]It refers to River Sui, River Bian, River Tuo and River Hui. They are four main rivers in Suzhou.

[3]These stones mainly originate in the Lingbi county.

[4]Consort Yu (died 202 BC), personal name Yu Miaoyi, also known as “Yu the Beauty”, was the concubine of the warlord Xiang Yu, who competed with Liu Bang (Emperor Gao), the founder of the Han dynasty, for supremacy over China in the Chu–Han Contention (206–202 BC).

[5]Xiang Ji (232–202 BCE), courtesy name Yu, better known as Xiang Yu, was a prominent warlord in the late Qin dynasty.

[6]Bai Juyi (Chinese: 白居易; 772–846) was a renowned Chinese poet and Tang dynasty government official. Many of his poems concern his career or observations made about everyday life, including as governor of three different provinces.

[7]Seal script is decorative engraving script, a name coined during the Han dynasty, which reflects the then-reduced role of the script for the writing of ceremonial inscriptions. Artists further beatified the art by endowing the script a plum blossom form, hereby seal script in plum painting taking its shape.
