【给孩子的中英文诗】 《警告》

今天我们读英国诗人珍妮.约瑟夫（Jenny Joseph)的诗：《警告》

警告

等我成了老太太，要穿紫衣服

戴红帽子，不搭配，也不衬我

挥霍养老金买白兰地和夏日手套

和绸缎凉鞋，说没钱买黄油

累了就坐在人行道上

大嚼店里的试吃食物，乱摁警铃

在公共栏杆上划我的手杖

补偿我年轻时的严肃正经

穿拖鞋走到雨里

从别人的花园摘花

还要学会唾人

老公你可以穿糟糕的衬衫，长更胖

一下子吃三磅香肠

或者整个星期只吃面包和酸黄瓜

囤积一盒盒笔、铅笔、啤酒垫、各种东西

但现在我们必须衣着干爽

付房租、不在街上说脏话

给孩子们做好榜样

有朋友可以共进晚餐，还得关注时事

但也许我现在就该稍微练习

那样认识我的人不会太惊慌

当突然间我老了穿上紫衣裳

When I am an old woman I shall wear purple
With a red hat which doesn't go, and doesn't suit me.
And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves
And satin sandals, and say we've no money for butter.
I shall sit down on the pavement when I'm tired
And gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells
And run my stick along the public railings
And make up for the sobriety of my youth.
I shall go out in my slippers in the rain
And pick flowers in other people's gardens
And learn to spit.

You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat
And eat three pounds of sausages at a go
Or only bread and pickle for a week
And hoard pens and pencils and beermats and things in boxes.

But now we must have clothes that keep us dry
And pay our rent and not swear in the street
And set a good example for the children.
We must have friends to dinner and read the papers.

But maybe I ought to practice a little now?
So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised
When suddenly I am old, and start to wear purple.

你有没有某一刻觉得大家一本正经，很可笑？你有没有曾经想做一些反叛习俗、让人吃惊的事情？我想每个人都有过，这样想毫不奇怪，因为我们总是一边做和别人一样的事获得安全感，一边想脱离人群保持自己的个性和自由。

这首诗曾在1996年被选为英国二战后最受欢迎的诗，再版了41次。不过写作它的作者当时只有29岁，不是一个老太太，不过这首诗吸引了很多女人，她们在美国、欧洲、澳洲、日本等三十多个国成立了红帽子协会，穿紫色衣服，戴红帽子聚会，追求50岁以后的自由和快乐。

珍妮.约瑟夫（1932-2018）出生在英国伯明翰，她是战后嬉皮士一代，她曾经做过记者，经营过酒吧，当过文学老师，出版了六部儿童文学作品和十多部诗集。她讨厌紫色，她老了也没有穿过紫色。
