One good turn deserves another. Really?

In Chinese, we have this proverb "善有善报" or “以德报德".

In English, this expression “One good turn deserves another" perfectly matches it. But in reality, does this saying apply to everything?

Echo would like to tell you a story, and it’s up to you to decide.

Story 故事

Once upon a time, there was a Giant who had a beautiful and verdant(a.翠绿的) garden. When he was away with his friend, many children came to play in his garden.

One day, he returned home. When he found so many children in his garden, he became furious(a. He thought the garden belonged to him, and no one could enter it freely.

So he built a high wall and put up a notice-board.

TRESPASSERS

WILL BE PROSECUTED

From then on, the children dared not to come to his garden. With time passing, the Giant discovered that the Spring wouldn’t visit his garden, nor did the Summer and the Autumn.

Only the Winter lingered(v.徘徊) around, and he also invited the Hail, the Frost and the North Wind. The Giant was gloomy(a.沮丧的)and lonely.

However, one morning, the Giant heard birds singing and smelled the fragrance of flowers. He was amazed at seeing the children playing in his garden.

Each child was sitting in the branches of a tree, but a little boy couldn’t reach the branch. He cried so bitterly that he didn’t see the Giant walking towards him. The Giant’s heart melted when he saw the little boy, so he put him up into the tree. Suddenly, the tree burst into blossoms.

The Giant realized that the children brought the Spring and he had been selfish, so he knocked down the wall and invited the children to play in his garden. But he never saw the little boy again.

Years went over, the Giant grew older. He enjoyed watching the children play happily in his garden, but sometimes, he missed the little boy.

One winter morning, as he looked out of the window, he saw the little boy standing under a tree which was full of white flowers. The Giant hurried out and came near to the little boy. There were imprints of nails on the little boy’s palms and feet. The Giant was struck by a sense of awe and knelt in front of him.

And the child smiled on the Giant, and said to him:

You let me play once in your garden, to-day you shall come with me to my garden, which is Paradise.

And when the children ran in that afternoon, they found the Giant lying dead under the tree, all covered with white blossoms.

This story is from Oscar Wilde, one of the fairy tales in his Happy Prince and Other Tales.

There were beautiful sentences frequently quoted by readers, they are:

1. “I have many beautiful flowers," he said; “but the children are the most beautiful flowers of all."

2. “You let me play once in your garden, to-day you shall come with me to my garden, which is Paradise."

Now do you think "One good turn deserves another"?
