“big name”是“大名”？那small name 就是小名喽？

看到“name”这个单词

首先想到的就是英语课本上的对话

“What’s your name?”

“I am xxx, nice to meet you.”

“name”作名词时，除了表示“名字”

还可以表示“名誉”

big name：名气很大的人——大腕

John is a big name in the show business.

约翰可是演艺界的大腕。

对话：

A:Do you know Mary?

你知道玛丽吗?

B:Of course. She is a big name in the musical world now.

当然了，她现在可是音乐界的大腕。

“大腕”还可以用big star或者big shot表示

Sometimes they will even specially design a dress for a big star.

有时设计师们甚至会为巨星特别设计礼服。

“celebrity”也有相同的意思：名人，名流

She dislikes the loss of privacy that attends TV celebrity.

说到“大腕”，与之相伴的还有一个词：人气

“人气”通常用来形容一个人的受欢迎程度

用英语表示是“popularity”

Ann's popularity declined recently.

最近安的人气下滑了。

Tom enjoys great popularity in China.

汤姆在中国很有人气。

那如果要表示一个人的大名或小名，要怎么说呢？

大名就是写在身份证上的、正式的名字

formal name

小名其实就是乳名，幼时起的非正式的名字

pet name / childhood name

芳名：famale's name / name of a young lady

但这种说法用的并不多

想要询问一位女性的名字，可以直接说：

May I have your name？

翻译为：请问芳名？
