保质期的三种说法，

shelf date

这是最常见的关于“保质期”的表达，

shelf 指书架，或者超市的货架，

如 library shelves（图书馆书架），

supermarket shelves（超市货架）。

所以，shelf date 就是

商品在货架上的日期。

expiration date

expiration 是expire的名词形式，

expire 是“到期，终止，失效，届满”的意思，

所以，expiration date 既可以指商品的到期日，

还指文件，协议，证件，任期的终止；

expiration date 是美语的说法，

英语是expiry date。

His term of office expires at the end of June.

他的任期六月底届期。

pull date

关于这个表达，

可以联系 pull back（撤回）来理解，

把商品撤回的日期即是保质期了；

pull date 是美语，

英语是 sell-by date；

by 在表示时间时，是“到...为止”，

如 by now（迄今为止），

by the end of this month（到这个月末为止）。

当然，并不是所有的商品都会用我们今天说的这三种，

有的会写 Best before: ...

或简写为BB，

意思就是“在此之前食用最佳”；

或者用 valid（有效的）这个单词。

关于

商品的生产日期（production date)，

国际通用的顺序是“日 / 月 / 年”，

而美国则不同，用的是“月 / 日 / 年”

所以，

生产日期如果是01/07/2020，

且保质期是一年的话，

你要看看商品的产地，

如果是欧洲，那么这件商品即将到期；

如果是美国，那么它就已经过期了！

当然，现在商家为了避免误解，

都会标上dd/mm/yy等字样，

d就是date（日期）

m就是month（月份）

y自然就是year（年份）了！
