It appeared more beautiful to live low and fare hard in many respects; and though I never did so, I went far enough to please my imagination. I believe that every man who has ever been earnest to preserve his higher or poetic faculties in the best condition has been particularly inclined to abstain from animal food, and from much food of any kind.
过低微的生活，吃粗陋的饭食，在许多方面都显得更美；虽然我从来没有做到这一点，但为了满足我的想象还是做了许多努力。我相信，每一个曾认真地把自己的高尚的、诗人的（我改成：诗意般的，更贴切）才能保持在最佳状态的人，都特别注意不沾荤腥，并且避免多吃任何食物。
Not that food which entereth into the mouth defileth a man, but the appetite with which it is eaten. It is neither the quality nor the quantity, but the devotion to sensual savors; when that which is eaten is not a viand to sustain our animal, or inspire our spiritual life, but food for the worms that possess us.
进入嘴里的食物并不能玷污一个人，而是吃食物时的胃口玷污了人。问题既不在食物的质也不在其量，而在于对口腹享受的热切；当吃的东西不是为了维持我们的肉体生命，或者也不是为了激励我们的精神生活，那就成了我们肚子里的寄生虫的食物了。
We are conscious of an animal in us, which awakens in proportion as our higher nature slumbers. It is reptile and sensual, and perhaps cannot be wholly expelled; like the worms which, even in life and health, occupy our bodies. Possibly we may withdraw from it, but never change its nature.
我们意识到自己内心里存在着兽性，我们崇高的天性一睡着，它就会相应地醒来。它是卑鄙的，喜爱感官享受的，也许难以完全驱逐出去；就像即使在我们活着和健康的时候也占据着我们身体的寄生虫一样。也许我们能够躲开它，却永远改变不了它的本性。
