The Land Run of 1893

When

Where

Who

What

When: 1893
Where: Oklahoma
Who: up to 100,000 “Boomers”
What:
The Cherokee Strip in Oklahoma was one of three land parcels the nation received by treaty with the United States in 1835 when the Cherokee were relocated to this area from their homes in Georgia.  Left open for cattle grazing, mostly, the lands remained undeveloped and a target of many white speculators for decades before being sold off on a first come first served basis at noon on this date.

Why

significant

As one of the largest of the “Oklahoma Land Grabs” it was also the last as the Indian nation was moved into a small corner of land.  100,000 homesteaders lay claim to approximately 40,000 parcels out of 600 million acres.  The resulting population growth helped fueled Oklahoma to state status in 1907.
