Iranian student supporters of the Iranian Revolution stormed the US embassy in Tehran and took fifty-two Americans hostage. The students saw the Americans as conspirators against the Revolution and demanded that the US return the exiled Shah of Iran, who was in exile and seeking medical treatment in the US. They remained in Iranian custody for 444 days.

Why
significant
American involvement in Iran because of its strategic location with Middle East oil and proximity to the Soviet Union included support of the hereditary monarchy, the Shah. That monarch used a secret police and often suppressed religious opposition to his authority inspiring a revolution that overthrew his government. A continued presence of US diplomats, and America’s protection of the Shah in exile led to one of the longest hostage taking crises in the modern age.
