When: Jan 25, 1956

What: In an interview with visiting American attorney Marshall MacDuffie, Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev indicated that he believed President Dwight Eisenhower was sincere in his desire for peace.

Why significant: The interview was the precursor to Khrushchev’s announcement later that same year that he wanted “peaceful coexistence” between the U.S. and the Soviet Union. During the discussion, Khrushchev declared that it was his desire that “We should have disarmament and we should think how to avoid a new war.”

However, later in the year, much of the new optimism was shattered when Soviet troops brutally suppressed revolts in Hungary. President Dwight Eisenhower condemned the Soviet invasion but took no action.

Eisenhower's main goals in office were to contain the expansion of the Soviet Union and reduce federal deficits. Eisenhower sought to improve Cold War-era relations with the Soviet Union, especially after the death of Joseph Stalin in 1953. Overall, Eisenhower did manage Cold War-era tensions with the Soviet Union under the looming threat of nuclear weapons during his presidency.
