Landing at Inchon

When

Where

Who

What

When: 1950
Where: Inchon, Korea
Who: US and UN Expeditionary forces
What:
Three months after North Korea’s surprise attack on South Korea, United Nations forces, led by US General Douglas MacArthur launch a surprise invasion at a point miles behind the front lines at the west port city of Inchon.

Why

significant

Inchon harbor had severe tidal fluxes meaning the attacks had to go off on a precise time table before the tide retreated from the city.  Despite this difficulty, and the first waves not going as planned, the attack was successful in opening a second front and proved to the North Koreans that their invasion was not going to be an easy victory.  The Korean War went on for another three years before an armistice, but there is as yet, still no treaty “ending” the war.
