在古罗马时代，当打了胜仗的将军回到罗马城时，就会举行隆重的凯旋仪式，这个仪式在拉丁语里被称为triumphus，英语单词triumph（成就、胜利）就来自这里。

单词trump是从triumph变化而来，16世纪20年代起开始用来表示某些纸牌游戏中的“王牌、主牌”，可以用trump card，复数trumps则可以表示“王牌花色、主牌花色”，即该花色下的所有牌为王牌。做动词时表示出王牌赢别人，引申为胜过、打败。
