In Spring and Autumn Period, there was a man named Kong Yu, who was a senior official of the State of Wei. He was clever and diligent in study. He had a good habit of asking questions. Whenever there was something he didn’t understand, he would ask others about it. Moreover, he often consulted someone who was less knowledgeable than him or someone inferior to him. Every time he did this, he didn’t feel ashamed about it at all.

After he died, the prince of State of Wei granted him a name “Wen”. Confucius later on also respected him very much and asked his students to learn from him.

故事梗概

春秋时期，有一个人叫孔圉（yŭ），他是卫国的大夫。他非常聪明而且勤奋好学。每当他遇到不懂的事情，他就会向他人询问。而且，他经常请教那些比自己学问差或者地位比自己低下的人。他也从未为此感到羞耻或不好意思。

在他死后，卫国国君赐他称号“文”。后来的孔子也非常尊重他，并且让自己的学生向他学习。

42.同舟共济

In the Spring and Autumn period, the State of Wu and the State of Yue didn’t get along well. They had been fighting against each other for years.

People in each country also didn’t have a good relationship. One day, the people of Wu and the people of Yue happened to be on the same boat to cross a river. At the beginning, they didn’t say a word with each other. When the boat sailed to the center of the river, a strong wind came. In no time, huge waves hit people’s faces. It seemed that the boat would sink at any time. Just then, they forgot all the hatred between two countries and began to help each other just like they were family. In the end, they safely got to the river bank under everyone’s effort.

Once, there was a pool near the gate of a city wall. In the pool, many fish were swimming happily there. One day, the gate burst into flames. One of the fish saw it and said to others: “Swim! Swim quickly! It’s on fire!” But other fish didn’t care too much. They thought the gate was far away from the pool and it would not hurt them. At last only that fish swam away. The fire burned bigger and bigger, so all people came to the pool to fetch water. In the end, the fire was put out and the water in the pool was used up. Unluckily, the fish in the pool died because of no water.

Once upon a time, two blind men were good friends, and they lived together. One day, they decided to cook some fish soup for themselves. Soon, they bought a fish and were ready to set up a cooker to cook it. One hour later, they began to taste the fish soup, but each of them couldn’t get any fish. They got angry and quarreled because both of them suspected that the other stole the fish and ate it. Having heard this, their neighbor came and he found the fish was on the floor. The two men didn’t put the fish into the pot at all at the very start.

One day, a man named Mao Kong said to Ai Zi: A duck laid one hundred eggs at one time. Ai Zi didn’t believe him. Mao Kong added: Maybe there were two ducks. Ai Zi still didn’t believe him. Mao Kong went on saying: Maybe there were three ducks. And so he repeatedly changed his words until he increased the number of the ducks to ten. Once again, Ai Zi didn’t believe him. After a while, Mao Kong told Ai Zi another thing: Last month, a piece of meat which is thirty meters wide and twenty meters long fell down from the sky. Ai Zi didn’t believe it. Mao Kong changed his words again: That’s a twenty-meter-wide and ten-meter-long meat. Ai Zi still didn’t believe him. Finally, Ai Zi asked Mao Kong: Whose duck is it? And where is the meat? Mao Kong said: I heard all of them from others. Then Ai Zi told his students: It’s a bad habit of spreading rumors like Mao Kong.
