《射雕英雄传》中的“雕”为什么这么翻译？

武侠巨制83版的《射雕英雄传》可谓经典中的经典，时至今日，每当打开其中的剧集，仍然深深被吸引！

然而，其中有个小细节，估计很多人都没注意到，那就是《神雕英雄传》的英译名：

《射雕英雄传》中的“雕”为什么被翻译为“condor“”？

这就得从“雕”为何物说起了。

一、“雕”为何物

《汉典》（www.zdic.net）是这样解释的：

鸟类的一属，大型猛禽，羽毛褐色，上嘴勾曲，视力很强，利爪，能捕食山羊、野兔等。

二、“雕”的英译

《汉典》里的解释里还有一个补充说明，认为雕也叫作鹫。其实，雕和鹫是不一样的，虽然《汉典》里对鹫的解释是这样的：

一种猛禽，毛色深褐，体大雄壮，嘴呈钩状，视力很强，腿部有羽毛，捕食野兔，小羊等。

英语中用来表示“雕”或“鹫”的禽类的单词有（来源于牛津英语在线词典：www.oxforddictionaries.com）：

1) vulture: A large bird of prey with the head and neck more or less bare of feathers, feeding chiefly on carrion and reputed to gather with others in anticipation of the death of a sick or injured animal or person.

2) eagle: A large bird of prey with a massive hooked bill and long broad wings, known for its keen sight and powerful soaring flight.

3) condor: A very large New World vulture with a bare head and mainly black plumage, living in mountainous country and spending much time soaring on massive outstretched wings.

原著中的“雕”主要是指郭靖在草原时所见到的，因为生活在草原地带，所以按理应该是草原雕或是金雕（尽管原著里提到的是叫白雕或黑雕，这不是种属的名称）。

因此，牛津英语在线词典给出的三个词中：

vulture会吃生病或是受伤的动物或人的尸体，所以，应该是我们所说的秃鹫，如上图。

而eagle则是指老鹰，如下图：

所以，condor是最为准确的。
