He looks like he is about to flare up. 

他看上去马上就要大发雷霆。

flare 是“燃烧”的意思，flare up 表示“突然勃然大怒，暴怒”，试想一下，我们非常生气时，是不是感觉头顶怒火在燃烧？所以 flare up, 表示“暴怒”，非常形象。

以后我们想表达某个人看上去马上就要暴怒了，就可以说：He looks like he is about to flare up.
