今天我们读的诗，是美国民谣歌手汤姆.帕克斯顿（TomPaxton）的一首歌：《我的儿子，约翰》

我的儿子约翰
My son, John, was a good boy and good to me
我的儿子约翰是个好男孩，对我很好
When we had hard times, well, he stood by me
当我们时运不顺，他总站在我身边
We were in work and out of work and on the go

If he had complaints, I never heard of one

我选这首歌，是因为它不仅是歌，也是诗。前半段描述了一个坚强懂事的男孩，后半段这个男孩去打仗，战争中见到朋友一个个死去，回来后变得沉默。这首歌朴实无华，没有叙述感情，却让人感觉到深沉的痛惜。这首歌是非常好的文学样本，告诉我们朴素克制的文字有时比华美抒情的文字更有感染力。正如中国古典诗歌从乐府中汲取民间的活力，民谣也是英美诗人的重要素材和灵感来源。

TomPaxton (1937- 至今)是美国民谣歌手，他写作了大量歌曲，被很多著名歌手演唱，他在2009年获得格莱美终身成就奖。他出生在美国芝加哥，后来搬到亚利桑那，在那里接触民谣，9岁时搬到奥克拉荷马州，很快父亲去世。他15岁时收到第一个乐器礼物，一把尤克里里，开始迷上音乐。他在奥克拉荷马大学学习戏剧表演，60年从军队退伍后开始写歌和演唱，成为民谣音乐的代表性人物。
