“Hello!”
Happy Birthday, Moon
by Frank Asch
One night, Bear looked up at the sky and thought… “Wouldn't it be nice to give the moon a birthday present?”
But Bear didn't know when the moon's birthday was, or what to get him.
So he climbed a tall tree to have a little chat with the moon.
“Hello, Moon!”
“Maybe I’m too far away,” thought Bear, “and the moon cannot hear me.”
“Now I am much closer to the moon,” thought Bear.
“Hello!”
This time his own voice echoed off one of the other mountains:“Hello!”
“Oh, boy!” he thought, “I'm talking to the moon.”
Tell me. When is your birthday?”
“Tell me. When is your birthday?”
“Well, it just so happens that my birthday is tomorrow!”
“Well, it just so happens that my birthday is tomorrow!”
“What do you want for your birthday?”
“What do you want for your birthday?”
“I would like a hat.”
“I would like a hat.”
“Oh, goody!” thought Bear, “Now I know what to get the moon for his birthday.”
“Good-bye!”
“Good-bye!”
That night, Bear put the hat up in a tree where the moon could find it.
“Hooray! It fits just right!”
“So the moon got me a hat too!”
“Wait!”
“Hello!”
“Hello!”
“I lost the beautiful hat you gave me.”
“I lost the beautiful hat you gave me.”
“That's okay. I still love you!”
“That's okay. I still love you!”
“Happy birthday!”
“Happy birthday!”

Papa, Please Get the Moon For Me
By Eric Carl
Before Monica went to bed, she looked out of her window and saw the moon.
The moon looked so near.
"I wish I could play with the moon" thought Monica, and reached for it.
But no mater how much she stretched, she could not touch the moon.
"Papa,"said Monica to her father, " Please get the moon for me."
Papa get a very long ladder,he carried the very ladder towards a very high mountain.
Then Papa put the very long ladder on top of the very high mountain. Up and up and up he climbed.
Finally, papa got to the moon.
"My daughter Monica would like to play with you, but you are much too big," said papa.
"Every night I get a little smaller," said the moon. "When I am just the right size you can take me with you."
And, indeed, the moon get smaller and smaller and smaller. When the moon was just the right size, papa took it.
Down and down and down he climbed.
"Here,"said papa to Monica, " I have the moon for you."
Monica jumped and danced with the moon. She hugged the moon and threw it into the air.
But the moon kept getting smaller and smaller and smaller, and finally it disappeared all together.
Then, one night, Monica saw a thin sliver of the moon reappear.
Each night the moon grew… and grew and grew.

Many Moons
Many Moons
by James Thurber
Once upon a time, in a kingdom by the sea, there lived a little princess named Lenore.
She was ten years old, going on eleven. One day, Lenore fell ill. The Royal Physician came to see her.
The Royal Physician was worried. He sent for Lenore’s father, the king.
“I want you to get well again. Is there anything your heart desire?”
“Yes, I want the moon, if I can have the moon, I will be well again.”
“Lord High Chamberlain!”
“I want you to get the moon, if princess Lenore get the moon, she will be well again.”
“The moon?”
“Yes, the moon. Get it tonight, tomorrow at the latest.”
“It just happens that I have with me a list of the things I have got for you in my time. Let me see, I have got the ivory, apes, peacocks, rubies, opals, emeralds, black orchids, pink elephants, and blue poodles, gold bugs, scarabs, and flies in amber, hummingbirds’ tongues, angel’s feathers, and unicorn’s horns, giants, midgets, and mermaids, frankincense, ambergris, and myrrh, troubadors, minstrels, and dancing women, a pound of butter, two dozen eggs, and a sack of sugar.”
“Sorry, my wife wrote that in there.”
“I don’t remember any blue poodles.”
“It says blue poodles right here on the list, and they are checked off with a little check mark, so there must have been blue poodles.”
“Never mind the blue poodles, what I want now is the moon.”
“But the moon is out of the question. It is 35,000 miles away and it is bigger than the room princess lies in. Furthermore,it is made of molten copper. I cannot get the moon for you. Blue poodles, yes, the moon, no.”
“Royal Wizard, I want you to get the moon for the Princess Lenore.”
“I have worked a great deal of magic for you in my time, your majesty. Now, let’s see. I have squeezed blood out of turnips for you, and turnips out of blood. I have produced rabbits out of silk hats, and silk hats out of rabbits. I have conjured up flowers, tambourines and doves out of nowhere, and nowhere out of tambourines and doves. I have given you seven league boots, the golden touch, and a cloak of invisibility. I get horns from elfland, and gold from rainbow.”
“What I want you to do now, is to get me the moon. Princess Lenore wants the moon, and when she gets it, she will be well again.”
“Impossible. It is 150,000 miles away, it is made of green cheese, and it is twice as big as this palace. Nobody can get the moon.”
“Royal Mathematician, I don’t want to here a long list of all the things you have figured out for me since 1907, I want you to figure out how to get the moon for the Princess Lenore. When she gets the moon, she will be well again. ”
“ I am glad you mentioned all the things I have figured out for you since 1907, it so happens I have a list of them with me. Now let’s see. ”
“I have figured out for you the distance between the horns of a dilemma, night and day, and A and Z. I have computed how far is up, how long it takes to get to away, and what becomes of gone. I know where you are when you are sixes and sevens, price of the priceless, the number of birds you can catch with the salt in the ocean-187,796,132, if it would interest you to know.”
“I don’t want to hear about seven hundred million imaginary birds, I want you to get the moon for the Princess Lenore.”
“But your majesty, the moon is 300,000 miles away, it is round and flat like a coin, only it is made of cardboard, and it is half the size of this kingdom. Furthermore, it is pasted on the sky. Nobody can get the moon.”
“What can I do for you, your majesty?”
“Nobody can do anything for me, the Princess Lenore needs the moon, but nobody can get it for her. Every time I ask anybody for the moon it gets larger and farther away.”
“They are all wise men, and so they must all be right. If they are all right, then the moon must be just as large and as far away as each person thinks it is. The thing to do is find out how big the princess Lenore thinks it is.”
“I never thought of that.”
“I will go ask her, your majesty.”
“Have you brought the moon to me?”
“Not yet, but I will get it for you right away. How big do you think it is?”
“It is just a little smaller than my thumbnail, for when I hold my thumbnail up at the moon, it just covers it.”
“And how far away is it?”
“It is not as high as the big tree outside my window, for sometimes it get caught in the top branches.”
“It will be very easy to get the moon for you. I will climb the tree tonight when it get caught in the top branches and bring it to you.”
“What is the moon made of, Princess?”
“Oh, it’s made of gold, of course, silly. Anybody knows that.”
“What is this thing what you asked me to make?”
“You have made the moon.”
“But the moon is 500,000 miles away and is made of bronze and is round like a marble.”
“That’s what you think.”
“We must keep the Princess Lenore from seeing the moon when it shines in the sky tonight. Think of something.”
“I know just the thing. If we can make some dark glasses for princess Lenore, then she will not be able to see the moon when it shines in the sky.”
“If she wore dark glasses, she would bump into things, and then she would be ill again.”
“We must hide the real moon from Princess Lenore, how are we going to do that? ”
“I know what we can do, we can stretch some black velvet curtains on poles, like a circus tent, then the Princess Lenore will not see the moon in the sky.”
“Curtains will keep out the air, so the Princess Lenore would not be able to breathe and she would be ill again.”
“We must do something so Princess Lenore will not see the moon tonight. If you know so much, figure out a way to do that.”
“I have it! We can set off fireworks in the gardens every night. We will make a lot of silver fountains and gold cascades, and Princess Lenore will not be able to see the moon.”
“Fireworks would keep Princess Lenore awake, she would not get any sleep at all and she would be ill again.”
“Look! The moon is already shining in the princess Lenore’s bedroom. Who can explain how the moon can be shining in the sky when it is hanging on a golden chain around her neck?”
“Who could explain how to get the moon when your wise men said it was too large and too far away? It was princess Lenore. She seems to know more about it than they do. So I will ask her.”
“Tell me, princess Lenore, how can the moon be shining in the sky when it is hanging on a golden chain around your neck? ”
“That’s easy, silly. When I lose a tooth, a new one grows in its place, doesn’t it? And when the Royal Gardener cuts the flowers, other flowers come back to take their place.”
“I should have thought of that, for it is the same way with the daylight.”
“And it is the same way with the moon, I guess it is the same way with everything.”

Kitten's First Full Moon
by Kevin Henkes
It was kitten's first full moon.
When she saw it, she thought,
“There's a little bowl of milk in the sky.”
And she wanted it.
So she closed her eyes
and stretched her neck
and opened her mouth and licked.
But Kitten only ended up with a bug on her tongue.
Poor Kitten!
Still, there was the little bowl of milk,
just waiting.
So she pulled herself together
and wiggled her bottom
and sprang from the top step of the porch.
But Kitten only tumbled-
bumping her nose and banging her ear
and pinching her tail.
Still, there was the little bowl of milk,
just waiting.
So she chased it –
down the sidewalk,
through the garden,
past the field,
and by the pond.
But Kitten never seemed to get closer.
Poor Kitten!
Still, there was the little bowl of milk,
just waiting.
So she ran to the tallest tree she could find,
and she climbed and climbed
and climbed to the very top.
But Kitten still couldn’t reach the bowl of milk,
and now she was scared.
Poor Kitten!
What could she do!
Then, in the pond,
Kitten saw another bowl of milk.
And it was bigger.
What a night!
So she raced down the tree
and raced through the grass
and raced to the edge of the pond.
She leaped with all her might –
Poor Kitten!
She was wet and sad and tired and hungry.
So she went back home –
And there was a great big bowl of milk on the porch justwaiting for her.
Lucky Kitten!

by Kate Banks
And if the moon could talk
by Kate Banks
Somewhere a pair of shoes lies under a chair.
A window yawns open.
Twilight blazes a trall across the wall.
And if the moon could talk,
it would tell of evening stealing through the woods
and a lizard scurrying home to supper.
Someone hums quietly.
A clock ticks.
A light flicks on.
And if the moon could talk,
it would tell of stars flaring up one by one
and a small fire burning by a tree.
Papa opens a book and turns the pages.
A story unfolds like a banner wandering across the sky.
And if the moon could talk,
it would tell of sand blowing across the desert
and nomads crouching by the dune.
On a small table sits a glass,
a wooden boat, a starfish, too.
And if the moon could talk,
it would tell of waves washing onto the beach,
shells, and a crab resting.
Music chimes from a small box on a shelf.
A mobile stirs the air.
On a chair, a rabbit sits listening.
And if the moon could talk,
it would tell of the wind rocking a tree
and a bird safe in its nest.
Mama hands her child the rabbit.
She hugs her and pulls the blankets tight under her chin.
And if the moon could talk,
it would tell of a faraway den
and a lion licking her cubs.
Eyes close.
There is a drowsy hush.
Darkness swells into a colorfull dream.
And if the moon could talk,
it would tell of a child curled up in bed wrapped in sleep.
And it would murmur
Good night.

I took the Moon For a Walk
by Carolyn CurtisI
I took the Moon for a walk last night.
It followed behind like a still summer kite,
Though there wasn’t a
string or a tail in sight,
when I took the Moon for a walk.
I carried my own light just in case
the Moon got scared and hid its face.
But it peeked through clouds
that were fragile as lace,
when I took the Moon for a walk.
I warned the Moon to rise a bit higher,
so it wouldn’t get hooked
on a church’s tall spire,
While the neighborhood dogs
made a train-whistle choir,
when I took the Moon for a walk,
We tiptoed through grass where
the night crawlers creep
when the rust-bellied robins
have all gone to sleep,
And the Moon called the dew so
the grass seemed to weep,
when I took the Moon for a walk.
We raced for the swings,
where I kicked my feet high and imagined
the Moon had just asked me to fly,
Hand holding hand through
the starry night sky,
when I took the Moon for a walk.
We danced cross the bridge
where the smooth waters flow.
The Moon was above and
the Moon was below,
And bright in between them
I echoed in their glow,
when I took the Moon for a walk.
Then as we turned back,
the Moon kept me in sight.
It followed me home and
stayed there all night,
And thanked me by sharing its sweet sleepy light,
when I took the Moon for a walk.
