The Mayflower is a symbol of early European colonization of the future United States. The settlers wrote and signed the Mayflower Compact after the ship dropped anchor at Cape Cod in order to establish legal order and to quell increasing strife within the ranks. The Mayflower Compact was based simultaneously upon a majoritarian model (taking into account that women and children could not vote) and the settlers' allegiance to the king. It was in essence a social contract in which the settlers consented to follow the compact's rules and regulations for the sake of order and survival. The culmination of the voyage in the signing of the Mayflower Compact was an event that established a rudimentary form of democracy, with each member contributing to the welfare of the community.
