“学好英语语法从这些概念开始”之动词

二、形容词的主要概念

(一)形容词(adjective)

A word, such as heavy, red, or sweet, that is used to describe (or modify) a noun. For example, a sweet taste, a red apple, a technical problem, an Italian woman, 'The man is very kind'.

用来描述或修饰名词的词语,如a sweet taste中的sweet、a technical problem中的technical、'The man is very kind.'中的kind。

(二)定语形容词(attributive)与表语形容词(predicative)

1、定语形容词

An attributive adjective is used before the noun it describes (e.g. a red apple or a heavy bag).

放在所描述的名词前面的形容词,如a red apple中的red、a heavy bag中的heavy。

【注意】

1)多个形容词的排序(sequencing)

arrangement in a sequence of adjectives which are used to describe a noun.

关于多个形容词的排序,请参看本文最后第三部分的文章详解。

2)后置定语形容词(postpositive)

A postpositive adjective is placed after the word it relates to, for example: I have something important to do.

后置定语(形容词)是指放在所修饰的词语后面的形容词,如'I have something important to do.’中的important。

2、表语形容词

A predicative adjective follows a verb such as be, become, grow, look, or seem. For example:

The future looks gloomy.

They grew weary.

跟在系动词(如be、become、grow)后面的形容词,如'They grew weary.'中的weary。

其实,这种“系动词+表语形容词”的结构,就是我们平常所说的“系表结构”中的一种。

(三)性质形容词(qualitative)与类别形容词(classifying)

1、性质形容词

An adjective that describes the qualities of a person or thing (e.g. an expensive car, a slenderwoman).

用来描述人或物的性质的形容词,如an expensive car中的expensive、a slender woman中的slender。

2、类别形容词

An adjective that is used to put people or things into categories or classes (e.g. an electric oven, a presidential candidate).

用来把人或物进行归类的形容词,如an electric oven中的electric、a presidential candidate中的presidential。

(四)形容词原形(positive)、比较级(comparative)与最高级(superlative)

1、形容词原形

The basic form of an adjective that is used to express a simple quality, for instance, sad, good, fast, loudly.

用来表达事物属性的形容词的原形,比如sad、good。

2、形容词比较级

The comparative form of an adjective is used for comparing two people or things, to express the fact that one has a higher degree of a quality than the other. For example:

She’s taller than me.

He’s happier today than yesterday.

They’re more popular than the Beatles.

用来比较两个人或物的形容词的比较级形式,比如'She's taller than me.'中的taller。

3、形容词最高级

The superlative form of an adjective is used for comparing one person or thing with every other member of their group, to express the fact that they have the highest or a very high degree of a quality. For example:

She’s the tallest girl in the class.

He’s the happiest person I know.

They’re the most popular band in the world.

用来比较一组(三个或以上)人或物中的最高级形式,比如'She's the tallest girl in the class.'中的tallest。
