Cuban Embargo
When |

For the two years after Castro’s revolution overthrew the Batista regime on Cuba in 1959, the US became increasingly hostile to the new, communist leaning government of Cuba. Castro’s move to nationalize American owned oil refineries led to the start of the Embargo on virtually all exports with the initial exception of food and medicine.
Why
significant
The Embargo remains largely in effect to this day besides specific instances of humanitarian assistance. It is debated whether or not the embargo is successful, forcing Cuba closer to the Soviet Union assistance than would otherwise have happened. As tensions have eased in some corners, beginning with Castro’s resignation, it is questionable how much longer it will remain in effect.
