Title: Introducing 'What If?' | UCL Institute ofEducation

It begins with a 2-min introduction. Directorof the UCL Institute of Education, Professor Becky Francis, announced the launch of a new public engagement series of events.

The IOE is a research powerhouse in the field of education and related areas of social science. Public engagement is another key part of what we do, and wewant to use our reputation and our scholarly excellence to help advance debateand understanding concerning education. So, what we are thinking about at thatend is creating a really stimulating out-ward facing events programme. That will bring these debates to the public, to education practitioners, and policymakers, and indeed to parents and students. We also want to bring some fresh thinking to pivotal debates in the field.

The events series is titled, “what if?” Radical and inspiring ideas for alternative futures. You can see that idea there is really to open up the space, to bring in some innovative thinking, and of course try to use research evidence to thisend as well. And through the series we will be bringing together a range ofcommentators, politicians, leading educational researchers and thinkers, leading practitioners and policy commentators and so on, really to stimulate debates from a whole range of different perspectives.

We want to generate debate. So, these will be panel discussions with lots of spacefor audience comment and participation, both in person and over social media aswell. We’ll be livestreaming and recording the debates to ensure maximum coverage and those will be on our website to share. I am really excited aboutthe IOE being an even bigger part of our public debate on educational issuesand look forward to welcoming everybody to the IOE to share in that debate.

Through this series we’ll be bringing together a range of commentators – academics, politicians, practitioners, policy wonks – and pushing them to bring someradical new thinking to some of the apparently intractable issues within education, not least the English education system.

This can help all of us reflect on the status quo, celebrate progress but also consider how we might change things for the better to achieve commonly held goals for our education system and what it can do for us all.

What if… we really wanted to transform teaching as a career choice?

时间 Time:Dec 05, 2017 05:30-06:45pm

简介 Intro:

Teaching offers a buzz unlike any other job, yet we are struggling to attract and thenretain teachers in the profession. Where have we gone wrong, and how can we change things for the future?

We’ve accepted that teaching may no longer be a lifelong vocation, and even made avirtue of that. We’re in the midst of trying to reduce teacher workloads, and there’s been talk of using technology to work around teacher shortages. But this is defeatist and piecemeal.

Is it time for a more radical rethink of what the teacher’s role and remit should be in order to make the most of this vital profession?

What if… we really wanted to overcome the academic-vocational divide?

时间 Time: Nov 28, 2017 05:30-06:45pm

简介 Intro:

It’s the stubborn divide that has endured across the decades, and seemingly more soin the English education system than in that of many other countries.

Why has the differential status of academic and vocational education been sointractable, and is there any real prospect of overcoming it? What if we werereally determined to level the playing field – what would it take?

What if… we really wanted to further social mobility through education?

时间 Time: Oct 31, 2017 05:30-06:45pm

Intro:

Boosting social mobility has been the rallying cry for Left and Right of late, with education highlighted as key to opening up life chances.

It’s a cause that’s generated reams of policy wonkery, as well as a far-reachingeducation reforms – most recently the drive to provide 'powerful knowledge’ forall in schools, through to the removal of the cap on university student numbers.

But is any of this really going to bring about the meritocracy that many say weshould aspire to, and any time soon? What if we wanted quicker results?

What if… we really wanted evidence-informed practice in the classroom?

时间 Time: Jan 23, 2018 05:45-07:00pm

Intro:

There’s been a big push to get classroom practice shaped by evidence of 'what works’. This has been largely inspired by advances in healthcare, where the use ofresearch trials and national guidelines to improve patient care and outcomes ismore established.

But this approach has not gone uncontested in education (or health) and 'evidence-informed practice’ is still to be firmly embedded across all schools. Why is this, and do we even have a shared understanding of what we’re aiming for when it comes to teachers’ engagement with and use of research?

This event heard from leading commentators about whether, in their view, this is the correct agenda for education and, if so, what evidence-informed practice shouldlook like and the steps needed to realise that vision across all schools. Join the debate about the implications for practice, teacher professionalism andeducation research itself.
