It was enough for him to become the richest person on the planet for the first time ever. Worth $189.7 billion as of Friday's market close, he is $4 billion wealthier than Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, who had held the title of world's richest for nearly a year.

Musk, whose fortune has nearly octupled in the 10 months since Forbes calculated net worths for the 2020 World’s Billionaires list, is not the only billionaire to make a massive, and somewhat unexpected, fortune in the past year. Until recently, bottled water billionaire Zhong Shanshan was little known outside of China. As of April 2020, he was worth $2 billion, ranked as the 1,063th richest person in the world by Forbes. In September, his company Nongfu Spring, which represents one-fifth of China’s bottled water market, made a successful debut on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. The stock has tripled since the IPO. Before 2020 ended, he surpassed Alibaba founder Jack Ma to become the richest person in China and he overtook Reliance Industries founder Mukesh Ambani of India as the richest person in Asia.
