蒙德里安说：“生活在本质上是简单的。虽然它可能会在形式上变得越来越复杂，但它不能失去这种简单性……这种复杂性需要被完善，简单是人类的完美境界。”于是为了追求这种最简单的世界本质和真实性，蒙德里安打造了一个平面、直线、矩形组成的结构世界和由红黄蓝三原色及黑白灰三非色组成的色彩世界。在蒙德里安看来这才是自然本质的普遍规律。他指出，自然中相互对立的一对对要素，如积极与消极、男性与女性、空间与时间、黑暗与光明，等等，都可以通过简化而压缩为水平线和垂线。
