Qiao Ye
Qiao Ye was born in Xiuwu County, Henan, in October of 1972. She is Deputy Chairman of the Henan Writers' Society and a member of the Council of the Chinese Writers Association. She is mainly engaged in writing novels and prose, and has published a total of over three million characters. Her novels include Confession, Demolition Records, and Hidden Pearl. Her novellas include The Slowest is Living, Lighter, Warmth, and Aphasia. Many of her pieces have been listed on the annual ranking of Chinese fiction and have won literary awards like the People's Literature Award, Chinese Literature Media Award, Zhuang Chongwen Prize, Beijing Literature Prize, Brilliant Literature Award, Yu Dafu Novel Award, Du Fu Literary Prize, Fiction Monthly 100 Blossoms Award, and Chinese Original Fiction of the Year Award. Her works have been translated and exported to the UK, Spain, Russia, Italy, Egypt, Mexico, Japan, and South Korea.
The Slowest is Living is Qiao Ye's feature novella. After it was first published in Harvest, it won the 5th Lu Xun Literary Prize, Yu Dafu Novel Award, and Du Fu Literary Prize. The novella tells the long, tenacious life of a grandmother and lovingly displays the familial ideologies found in Chinese culture, as well as the potential beauty of humanity. The mental barriers between the grandmother and her granddaughter get broken down into love, forming a unique tension for the story. The contemptuous-yet-envious narration immerses readers in this long reminiscence of the Chinese spirit.
Demolition Records is Qiao Ye's long-form non-fiction piece that was first published in People's Literature and later won a People's Literature Award. In this book, Qiao Ye uncompromisingly describes the realistic, cruel contest between people and the world for their interests. In an abnormally complex scene, among layers of pressure constricting the story, her characters seem cunning, calm, and worldly, yet tortured in their minds and hearts. With its profound insights and piercing language, this book makes the reader find truth from what appears to be twisted realities, and hides the ways of the world behind it.
Confession is a representative piece of Qiao Ye's novels. It was first published in People's Literature, and earned a People's Literature Award. Confession expresses the author's rich, refined sense of womanhood while also investigating people's sense of shame and guilt, and reflecting Qiao Ye's profound awareness of these issues. We get a sense that the ethics she proposes are an attempt to help all humankind. She reveals the complex struggle between human nature's good and evil while reaching spiritual heights of repentance and redemption. The author narrates the tale by telling a story within a story, showing hard-earned confidence and maturity in her literary explorations.
Literary critics widely believe that in Confession, Demolition Records, The Slowest is Living, and Lighter, Qiao Ye adroitly becomes aware of the division, conflict, and mistakes hidden in people's complex experience. At the same time, she is also aware that it is these "cracks" which give space for her novels. Her witty, sensitive writing style fills even the most lowly of character's experiences with drama, which is then identified and named in a unique and well-received quality. Qiao Ye is also a prose writer with her own original style. In her prose, she imagines and writes about people's contentment, and also delves into the complex problems that threaten such contentment.
