ASSOCIATION

Clutching the pencil in my hand

I think of the tree that birthed it

Its wood must still

remember the forest

the buzz of life within it

Drinking a savory soup

I think of the salt melted by the broth

Those grains

must still remember the sea

vicious waves, schools of free fish

Ten thousand ways for ice to flower on glass

I think of the north wind that howled all night

In the darkness it rode out to earth’s end

never thinking that its brutish trail

would leave such delicate footprints

Watching a distant kite sashay in the sky

I think of children running on the earth

The child who cheers for his own kite

will never know that the brittle line in his hands

tugs an old man back to his childhood

Touching the silk scarf before my chest

I think of silk-spitting worms on the mulberry tree

Those encased creatures

dreamt of bursting forth in flight

but were boiled for their silk instead

Listening to this tender lament

I think of the singer

the sad and lonely one

who drank down the bitter years

but wove that soured history into a rope of kindness

OVERLAP

Worlds forever overlapping

Over and under

Over and under

Look outside

There are windows beyond this window

Doors beyond this door

Mountains beyond this mountain

Skies beyond this sky

Look inside

A pupil within my pupil

Mouth within my mouth

Heart within my heart

Soul within my soul

How to break away from this overlap

breaking off the lock of layers

First, go inland

Then, come out

Open wide that pupil within

Ignite that internal heart

Set off that soul within this soul

Push out that window beyond

Open that door yonder

Ascend the mountain higher

Regard the sky

That world without overlap

where all roads go wide

just may be a free one

PAINS

No need for points and blades

or bats and sticks to hit with

Those painful instants split

like lightning at night

and drive straight into the heart

Yet, no blood is shed

You will not find the hairline scar

I can’t tell you where the hurt is

how it subsumes every inch of me

from my open face

to my hidden frame

Sometimes, a cool breeze alone

could recall the pain

Or a pair of questioning eyes

burn like a searing rod

and even a second question

can be briars across the back

I am harassed by pain, frequently

but I am not afraid

The living are weak

Numbness is a greater tragedy

If I were catatonic

I may as well be a withered branch

a cold cliff rock

Even silvergrass

cries, broken by a mad wind

Even reed

wails, trampled by the storm

My writing doesn’t have the ability

To carry the caged bird onto a branch

Birds that have lost the knack of finding food

Only hope that my writing

Can enlarge the size of their cage

I AM TOO SHORT

What does it means that the earth

is suspended in space?

And what am I here

On this earth for?

When was my coming decided

and where will I return to?

And if this earth

weren’t suspended in space

where could it stand?

These matters are way out there

My reach is too short

I Tell My Son

Xu Jingya

when you were born

someone was playing chess

having lost the target

we stand on the stars

and shoot at the sky

son, it's really nothing for me

to pass my breath to next generation

what I gave you first was an ear

you should hear

someone always called your name

in front of you

there will be a very ugly person

sneering and sitting down to drink wine

that's a friend who doesn't know my name before my birth

he and I even have not opened a box for all my life

in my generation

fragrant, melodious yet bitter

Beethoven's mane swept like music

yet I had never sung happily for a single day

it was not the case my dad didn't reach out his hand

in the end, what I was holding

was still all the fingers of my own

only the wind in my heart could bear witness

each of my fingerprints was full of storms

your father

is not a mild man

just because I think too well in my heart

what I have said is always not good

I have been writing with my left hand all my life

yet had to reach out my right hand when shaking hands

oh, my son, this is the fate

that I've chosen for our family

so rudely before your birth

I've already been me

you are being you

but I still would like to tell you

if others head for left, you right

contrary to the world --

how charismatic

one day, my strength

will slip away completely

when your biceps bulge out

I am having a date with your strength

I won't leave you for even one day

but secretly follow you to go everywhere

no matter whether I'm alive or not

son, before setting out, you should

wipe the old-style pointed leather shoes

to be extraordinarily profound for me

one person, for all his life

hasn't had a few rivers to cross

I finally understand, the silence

that I've never learned well

is really the greatest piano

the button missed on my chest

has exposed all my bullet holes

in the whole world, I only choose

one person as my extending line

son, only your sight

can wipe my unbendable back

you should follow the keel's curve

to look for a woman

a man can make water

go upward

your father has failed

to learn flying secretly all his life

I give you my broken wings as a gift

like an old handkerchief

just feel free to fly as you wish

your heart is the sand

scattered by me and a good woman

your heart, let it beat as you like

as your father, I only hope that

you think of me at your emptiest time

only ten times all your life

only one second for each time

how I wish

you live a life safely

but life is always unbalanced

one day, when the sea billows

I hope you would stand right there

now let me say it again

when someone calls your name

you shall respond

son, please keep in mind

you should always be

as beautiful as my regret

 Poetry is Love

The God creates the love

spreading all over the universe.

The God also creates the poets

in praise of the love

for sunrise and sunset

for floral fragrances for bird chippirngs

for small grasses for big trees

for beasts for livestock

for the wind for the rain

for sad for joy

for meeting each other in laughing hugs

for parting to wave hands in tears.

In your poems

I feel the mutual attraction for loving poetry.

The images from natural things

express your passion your affection

because love is poetry

and poetry is love

is your calling.

  Firefly

There are always fires in the life

lasting forever

naturally to raise the wind

transmitting Sappho's poems across the ocean.

It sounds beautiful tenderness

like an angel gospel,

I don't have to wait,

as soon as open my heart

it resonates in mind wholeheartedly.

The destiny of a poet

is the same as a firefly

just displaying

a faint light to the world

in the darkness of the wild.

Someone dislikes it too gloomy

while others get comfortable.

That dim light maybe

without warmth as a fireplace,

yet it is a hope of the soul

like a lighthouse at seaside

indicating the vessel

to beach safely.

Oh my Sappho,

when someday

you become a seagull

there are reefs for you to stay,

there are land for you to nest

for you to derive life here.

BATHING IN DEW

(on the Yangtze River)

“those who bathed in the dew

were believed to become immortals.”

—Robert Payne, The White Pony

They say that those who bathe

in the morning dew become immortals.

Thus, I leave my plate outside

waiting for the rise out of the grateful earth.

Each dawn, the dew returns the rain to the sky

so that the clouds can form again and fly to all

dry spots of earth, and spill their load.

Thirsty, the earth drinks in the offering of sky

and new shoots spring out of the saturated dark.

Then, each time the last star appears beside

the golden moon, and the shafts of sunlight

begin to strike the earth, the dew comes up and up,

flying like a string of kites, up and up into the sky.

Catch the morning rise, bathe in it, drink it—

become immortal as a kite slipped from its tether

becomes part of the clouds which come from the earth

and inevitably returns again and again to its mother, the sky.

UNDER THE TEMPLE OF HEAVEN

(Beijing, China)

On the square under

the Temple of Heaven,

I consider ancient instruments—

strung across dragon designs—

plucked in coordination

with the four seasons,

sonorous stones tapped

for their hidden sounds,

gongs & bells drummed

with padded wood,

processions moving across

shadows of the sundial.

Once an Emperor spoke

and his word was law—

a law that they said

came from the Heavens.

Now we earth people

scatter upon the stones

considering thoughts

of Earth and of Heaven,

perhaps where phoenixes

really do burn to ashes

and emerge renewed/reborn,

where dragons really do fly over

the Temple of Heaven protecting

those beneath their mythic wings.

(5 November 2001)

MY MUTT

Toto. You were full of exceptional reveries.

When I returned home from a long day’s work,

all sorrows disappeared in your presence,

a thousand promises of life filled the horizon

in late blue afternoons with the smell of

a pink cloud of crab apples in Riverside Park

resplendent with the nostalgia of the moments.

What’s left of you now are these photos,

taken on days that are wrapped like cotton

around the trees on an empty earth

suspended from threads about to break,

the two of us tangled in each other’s arms

and of our other happy moments, when chasing

each other’s shadows on our old grounds.

Sultan Catto

Wait for me, Time, you’re galloping too fast.

Wait for me in the pages of this endless pain of biography, in that shop of rare books, in the waters of the wild heart.

Wait for my arrival in my magisterial disguise.

Place those blindfolds back over your eyes, re-open them in that void grander than life, go re-read Rumi, that wise, far-seeing ant,

let him revolve your thoughts on a wheel of fortune, let his beliefs get lost among your own.

Wait for me, so you can comprehend in my utter silence. Since the days of childhood, there is in me

Poppy Red

Of that summer

you had no memories

only red poppies

small flames

that burned your soul

a thousand poppies

open wounds

bleeding

inside you.

Your journey in search of oblivion

started in the soundless hours of the day

now lost

in the barren paths of the mind.

Then long sunset strips

sad omens

stained the sky red

slowly

surrounding  you

in deep muffled silence

 The Ocean’s Call

Beneath a mantle of silence

only the waves are alive today

in their relentless dance.

Pearl clouds

play in the distance

and the sun

too quickly

comes and vanishes.

I walk along the ebony cliff

shivering at the wind’s icy touch

while

time and space dissolve

in the primordial roar

of the cobalt-blue sea.

ETERNAL RAINBOWS

One day,

I was wrapped in a rainbow,

Like a fetus in a mother's womb.

Oh, my eternal rainbow mummy!

One day,

I leaned on the corner of a rainbow,

Lamenting the deceased like a waning moon.

Oh, my eternal rainbow daddy!

One day,

I struggled along the curly rainbow,

Feeling a pair of hands pushing behind me.

Ah, my eternal rainbow wife!

One day,

I wore the rainbow I've kept watch almost all my life

Around the cool neck of a young guy.

Oh, my eternal rainbow son!

The rainbow runs through three generations,

The same rainbow, with different incarnations.

THE GIRL'S EYES

This is how we meet,

Meeting in our eyes.

An eagle brings me your speaking eyes in its beak,

They are kindly, with the flavour of chocolate,

And also melancholy, with a touch of wildness,

Thus the isolated heart of mine deeply drawn by it.

The sea breeze greets me with your blue eyes,

They are moist, and even a bit salty.

I am walking briskly in the waves of your eyes,

Triggering your farewell to the loneliness of your soul.

This is how we meet,

Meeting in our eyes.

Let us listen to the wings' sound of the eagle,

Or in the footsteps of the sea should we follow.

Waiting for the bus

I'm waiting for the bus
Many busses pass by the station
They go to different places
But there is no bus to take me where I want to go
I am still waiting, from winter to spring
Nobody cares about the people waiting for the bus
They walk, or they run
I wait from dark till dawn
Trees hibernate and wake up,
So also do the birds
Did humans change in thousands of years?
Only a few stars have awoke
I don't know the distance to the place I want to go
I keep waiting for the bus.

Everything is going down

Winter is coming and everything is falling
Only the night is getting fuller and fuller
The pupils of the luminous sky are clear
They are apparently unharmed by fear
But humans are knocked back to their origin by the virus
Which looks for any weak body it can attack
Furious lips and teeth add to the confusion
Desire bends the path of light
The image of a world wrapped in roses
Covers its vast ugliness of reality,
A deception called prosperity.
Translation by Germain Droogenbroodt

A POET PLAYING THE CELLO

The player incites the lips

His fingers touch the score turning the pages gently

As if a bird of paradise flew away

A five-minute speech stirs my imagination

What is the past of this country?

The cellist starts playing

My eyes are fascinated,

My ears catch the magnetic sound

He casually casts a glance

So gently making my soul float like a leaf

And when our eyes meet again, oh

I feel as if the sea flooded my heart

As if my body, a soldering iron, plunged into water

O God, what a splendid time I had, intermingling heaven and earth

Shyness does not prevent my soul from fleeing my body

A moment before he bowed his head to play

He glanced at me again

I tried to parse the Spanish utterance

and grasp the Echoes of the Moors

The might of his music swept away my heart

I felt like being in a wine cellar but unable to drink

Tapping the cask and appealing to the power of God

And then recognizing, my dear, it was not you

But another in those mysterious eyes

When he stopped playing

and moved in my direction

At that moment I became the symbol of a tree

I still can recall those two hours

Which were so mysteriously and enigmatically felt.
