2 I glanced down at the phone, and I realized I had kicked it off the hook when pacing the day before.
我低头看了一眼电话, 我意识到我前一天在房间里走来走去的时候不小心把听筒踢掉了

3 I stumbled out of bed, I put the phone back on the receiver,
我匆忙地从床上起来, 我把听筒放回去

4 and it rang a second later, and it was my brother, and, boy, was he pissed. (Laughter)

now在这里并不是表示”现在”
所以它后边跟的是过去时tried并不奇怪
now在这里是讲故事时的某一个时间点
now=used in stories to mean at a particular time in the story
We ran down the road and past the house, now it was hidden in the darkness.
注意这一串动词都用了过去时, 包括was, tried, happened, said, didn’t等
If you saw (that) I wasn’t calling you
中间省略了that
这里saw并不是字面意思”看到”, 而是引申为”发现, 意识到”
有童鞋听成了thought, 但thought意思成了: 以为没有打电话. 而这里的意思是: 发现没有打电话
