screwdriver是什么意思？
Lyida（我老婆）也参加了这期的单词书共读，她读的是剑桥英语在用系列的中级。我陪她一起学习，她问我：to look a gift-horse in the mouth是什么意思？
其实我也不知道这个表达是啥意思
，我说我上个厕所啊，回来再跟你说。用一泡尿的功夫我查到了：
然后我和Lydia说：这都不知道啊？！来，Eric老师给你讲讲...
to look a gift-horse in the mouth这个表达之后，是“screwdriver”，我问Lydia认不认识这个词。她说：看着眼熟！（她有英语专业八级证书），我猜它的意思是“脾气比较暴躁的司机”吧？
听到这个答案，我的表情是
她解释说到：screw是“fuck”的意思，骂人；driver是司机。连在一起我猜是一个总骂人的司机...
我笑了十分钟...
screw最根本的意思是“螺丝”，screwdriver是“螺丝刀”
但是screw也可以做动词，意思和fuck差不多，看图片是不是很形象：
聪明可爱贤惠美丽的Lydia只记住了screw的带“污”用法，加上刚生完宝宝，一孕傻三年，就把screwdriver，“螺丝刀”，理解成了““脾气暴躁的司机”

从这个小故事，我想到了英语中的文字游戏（wordplay），Bill Bryson在Mother Tongue中就专门用一章来介绍wordplay。
例如anagram，“易位构词”。把triangle这个词的字母顺序重新组合，我们就可以得到integral；把emigrants重组就可以得到streaming；Old Testament可以变成most talented；funeral可以变成real fun...
例如palindrome，“回文”，顺着读和倒着读都一样。比如"Am I as stupid as you are?" "A man, a plan, a canal, Panama!"（这个让人拍案叫绝
)
例如“伦敦腔”(cockney）中的rhyming slang（同韵俚语），使用一个与单词韵律相同的短语代替这个单词。如果你看过Mind Your Language这部英剧的话（非常推荐！），一定对它并不陌生，剧中的Sid说的就是rhyming slang，感受一下下面的视频：
这里大量的运用了rhyming slang，翻译过来是这样的：
I had a bit of a bull and cow (row, “吵架”的意思）) with the trouble and strife (wife). It was all over the dustbin lids (kids?). I went down the fog and toad (road) into the rub-a-dub (pub) and I met my old plate (mate). He looked a bit uncle dick (sick) so I get him a Jack the Dandy (brandy) and I had a Vera Lynn (gin). One thing led to another and we were both Brahms and Liszt (pissed，“喝醉”的意思). So I staggered back home, took off my Dickie dirt (shirt) and my daisy roots (boots) and passed out like a light on the apples and pears (stairs).
葛传椝先生在《怎样读通英文》中也提到了一些文字妙用的例子，比如：
In parts of the country farm labourers are paid in vegetables. Occasionally a workman will ask for an increase in his celery. (妙在celery和salary念法相仿）
