“母校”的英文不是“mother school”！你还要继续错下去吗？
mother school≠母校
千万一看到母校，就将其直译为“mother school”，这是典型的中式英语。
不能说成“mother school”，能不能说成“former school”呢？当然也不行！我们一般将“母校”译为“Alma Mater”，有些同学不禁要问了，这是什么单词？见都没见过。
其实，你没见过很正常，因为“Alma Mater, [ˈælmə ˈmɑːtə(r)]”源自拉丁语，意思是表示“养育生育的母亲”，现在多用来形容“母校”和“高校的校歌”，如果你记不住的话，也可以用“old school”来表示母校，同样正确。
He has fond feelings for his Alma Mater.
他对自己的母校有着深厚的感情。
I still have affection for my old school.
我依然眷恋着母校。
这两天，全国各地的高校、幼儿园以及中小学陆续迎来了秋季开学报到日。
说到“开学”，大家知道它的英文表达怎么说吗？首先纠正一点，我们不能对照着“开学”的字面堆砌，将其译成open school。当然了，我们也不能想当然地将其译为school opens，因为它另有含义。
school opens≠开学
在该短语中，open并不是“开学”的意思，而是“向公众开放”的意思，指的是校园开放日（School Open Day），也可以用open house来表示，可供公众参观。这种现象在我国也很常见，通常是知名院校向外发出告示，告知公众校园开放日的时间，以便他们参观。
剑桥大学开放日
University of Cambridge opens to the public on this weekend.
剑桥大学这周末对外开放。
I will attend the open house organized by Stanford University next month.
我会参加斯坦福大学下个月组织举办的校园开放日。
new semester（或term）starts/begins
开学往往代表着一个新的学期的开始，反过来说新学期的开始就是开学，所以我们就可以用new semester（或term） starts/begins来表示开学。
需要说明的是，semester适用于美国，指一学年分为两个学期，即春季和秋季学期（the spring and fall semester）；term适用于英国，指一学年分为三个学期，即春季、夏季和秋季学期（the spring, summer and fall semester）。
As the new semester begins, we meet each other again.
现在开学了，我们又见面了。
The new term starts at the beginning of September.

a new school year kicks off
学年是school year，一个新学年的开始也标志着学生们开学。而kick off在足球比赛中表示“中线开球”，意味着一场球赛的开始。所以，kick off就可以引申为“...开始”的意思。

对学生们来说，迎接开学常常伴随着紧张和兴奋的情绪。
back to school
开学意味着返校，所以就有了back to school这一表达，在使用这一短语时注意搭配，be和动词（一般为go）均可。

The thought of going back to school tomorrow makes him unhappy.

“去上学”用英语怎么说？
关于“去上学”到底该怎么说，有两个经典的表达：go to school和go to the school。
虽然就一个定冠词the的区别，但这两个短语可别傻傻分不清楚，他们表示的是不同的意思。前者的意思是“去上学”，而后者的意思是“到学校”。
① 有冠词时，go to表示“去某个地方”
His mother often goes to the school to see him.
他的妈妈经常去学校看他。
② 零冠词时，go to表示“常规性出席”
He usually goes to school by bike.
他通常骑自行车到校上课。
“（开学）报到”用英语怎么说？
开学第一天，我们都要到班级去报到。报到的实质就是登记信息，老外通常都用register一词来表示。
