So here's one of the classic indications for MR. And it's an indication for which it really is able to outdo CT quite significantly. Notice on these in and out-of-phase images that the entire liver is losing a great deal of signal. On the out-of-phase images compared to the in-phase, this is a classic example of diffuse hepatic steatosis. Now examples like this, not a diagnostic dilemma, but where I find MR to be especially helpful when it comes to hepatic fat, is in differentiating true lesions from examples where you may have focal fat or focal fatty sparing. And in those examples MR with in- and out-of-phase or chemical shift imaging can be extraordinarily helpful in terms of differentiating fatty infiltration or focal fatty sparing from true pathology.
